Did you know that how much pain you feel can depend on the color of your hair? According to research out of Louisville Kentucky, people with red hair are more sensitive to pain and thus need more anaesthetic during surgical operations. In this study, a low dose of anaesthetic was given to a group of red haired women along with another group with dark hair and then, believe it or not, they were subjected to electric shocks. The researchers (otherwise known as Bullies), then kept increasing the anaesthetic medication dose until the women no longer complained of the discomfort (or stopped hitting the scientists). What they found is that the red heads complained longer and louder because they required 20% more anaesthetic dose than their counterparts. It is believed that this difference in pain sensitivity is related to the fact that red heads have a mutation in a gene that is responsible for not only pigment production but also how the brain modulates pain. So, although changing the color of your hair may seem like a suitable option, the pain often lies deeper than your roots.
