PROFILE: The Outlandish Beliefs Of Rick Perry’s Prayer Rally Endorsers

By Guest Blogger on Aug 3, 2011 at 1:00 pm

On August 6th, Gov. Rick Perry will host a rally of prayer and fasting for a “nation in crisis.” Perry has invited all 49 other governors to share in the event he defines as “a nondenominational, apolitical, Christian prayer meeting.” He is expected to announce his presidential intentions soon after the rally.

A quick look at the event’s endorsement list features a who’s-who of extreme right-wing religious figures. They warn of dire consequences for our nation: birds dying out because gays can serve in the military, hurricanes ravaging “sinful cities,” even Oprah Winfrey being a sign of the Apocalypse. Yet despite their outlandish beliefs and rhetoric, Perry features their support prominently on the event’s website.

ThinkProgress has compiled the top outlandish beliefs from pastors associated with Perry’s prayer rally:

– Oprah is a sign of the Apocalypse: In his channel on GOD TV, Mike Bickle called Oprah a “forerunner to the harlot movement.” Bickle also warned that traditional “marriage will be…defiled” as the “gay marriage agenda, which is rooted in the depths of Hell,” progresses.

– Blackbirds are dying because of gay soldiers: Dr. Cindy Jacobs recorded a video declaring a connection between the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the sudden death of blackbirds in Beebee, Arkansas as a divine punishment. She also called “girl-on-girl kissing” a “plague on society” and asked divine forgiveness for the violation of a woman’s “natural use.”

– The Statue of Liberty is a “demonic idol”: In various sermons, John Benefiel called the Statue of Liberty a “demonic idol.” He also expressed a belief that homosexuality is a plot contrived by the Illuminati “to limit the world population.”

– Hurricane Katrina was divine retribution for the city’s “sin”: John Hagee said residents of New Orleans were at fault for Hurricane Katrina: “I believe that New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God and they were recipients of the judgment of God for that.” Hagee has also insinuated that “the Holocaust…was the fault of Jews themselves” and Hitler acted as a “hunter” corralling the Jews into Israel.

– Gay rights movement from the “pit of hell”: Dwight McKissic denounced comparisons between the civil rights movement and the gay rights movement because the latter is a “satanic anointment…inspired by the anti-Christ” that comes from the “pit of hell.” McKissic also said that “God uses natural disasters to punish evil,” pointing to Hurricane Katrina because “New Orleans flaunts sin.”

– Jesus actually opposed the minimum wage: Influential pastor David Barton has made a name for himself by distorting Biblical text to support his claim that Jesus opposed the minimum wage and the capital gains tax. Barton has also argued that public school students are getting “homosexual indoctrination.”

– Children of gay parents are like orphans of 9/11: During this year’s Faith and Freedom conference, ThinkProgress reported on Jim Garlow’s comparison of orphans of the September 11th attacks to children raised in same-sex households. Garlow is also known for his controversial allegation that African Americans have saved the country from the “enslavement of gay marriage.”

– Director of a Christian para-military group: Jay Swallow is the Director of SWAT, a “Christian Military Training Camp” organized “for the purpose of dealing with the occult and territorial enemy strong holds in America.” Participants of the training session sign a liability waiver before becoming “warriors” against “occult and territorial enemy strongholds in America.” Participants are also trained “how to pray for casinos on Native American land.”

– African Americans are “cursed” by homosexuals: Willie Wooten published a book about the curse of the African American people. He wrote that their tolerance of “immorality” in the Democratic Party begets curses of “adultery, incest, children from incestuous union, children born out-of-wedlock, destroyed virginity, bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism.”

– Blackbirds are dying because of gay soldiers:

I didn't know gay solders were killing blackbirds. I would rather them kill blackbirds than people like the heterosexual soldiers do.

The self-proclaimed Christians that are more worried about blackbirds dying than people getting blown to bits by our soldiers concern me far more than blackbirds dying.

This is interesting. Are they praying they will win the jackpot, or win a bundle playing poker or blackjack? Somehow I don't think God hears them.

God is always good!

Forgive my idle curiousity, but what is the make and type of your bicycle?

I myself have several and did the eleven mile Leif Erickson Drive route in Forest Park in Portland, OR yesterday (the largest city park in the nation) on my LeMond Poprad cyclecross machine.

Usually on the road here in Eugene I generally ride my 1988 Cinelli Super Corsa with a Campagnolo Chorus Groupo on my recreational rides.

It is nice to hear of someone in here who also likes my favorite way of getting around.

I'm 5' 6' thus I had a lot of advantages when I raced. I still have my Puch Reynolds 531 race bicycle, but Got rid of the Carbon fiber Alan after seeing one of these first generation carbon fiber bikes disintergrate in sprint on a Thursday Eugene Bicycle Club training ride. I sold it to a petit woman who still has it and loves it.

I like Kleins and have two pre Trek company ownership mountain bikes, a Pinnicle Elite, and a Fervor that replaced it when it was gone three years due to theft.

I saw that bike on the road, extracted it from the mope riding it and restored the components. Fortunately it still had the Klein Ground COuntrol handlebar/stem assembly.

He didn't like being forcibly unassed from it, but announcing, "Hey, that's my bike!" usually sets off a bike race. Both have no shocks of any kind, but the Fervor does have Klein Carbon fiber bars,

I have a Bridgestnoe MB-1 (1993) and RB-1 (1994) which I love as well.

Bicycling has always been my most loved activity recreationally, and I worked several years as a mechanic prior to and after being in the military.

I prefer high quality steel frames, but were I to be younger and still racing, I would of course be by nessesity into titanium or carbon fiber. The new CAD designed CF frame sets are far superior to those from my hay day.

I understand your woes being a taller cyclist and I agree the arospace grade aluminum is a harse ride. But that is why I only have mountain bike Kleins.

Both have very fat off road tires, and the MB-1 a set of wheels I built and put road tires on. I should get rid of the older Klein, but after feircely looking for that machine for three years and paying the reward for the information allowing me to find it, I find that hard to do.

Another man came up and indignantly tried to get it from me as he turned out to be the first one to have it after it was stolen from a career bike/car theif. He turned out to be a lawyer and had my wheels with the Phil Wood hubs (and my name discreetly marked in Morse Code on them) on another bike, and I got those back too.

He got cited for possession of stolen property, as he lied to the police investigator who got involved in that case. He was a glib talker, but I had the original sales recept and a copy of the theft report, so he lost the game of brinksmanship on that one.

Eugene has so much bicyling and theft along with the culture, that the Kriptonite Lock company will not honor their warranty here.

Bicyling has kept me looking young for my age and fit, and I will never hang up my cleats. I agree it's too bad you are so far away, but this is a top knotch city with the best bicycling path and route system I have seen anywhere with 12- 15 percent of commuters riding them to and from work.

If you ever come out this way, bring a bike, and I'll give you a tour. It will blow your mind.

Yes, I have. Collins Bicycles sells Felts, and they had one on the floor for a short time. Felts are very popular and great bikes. You see many of them in Portland as bicycle Gallery (where I have worked before) carries them.

So far Rick Perry's website for this event -- "Pray Perry into the Presidency Rally" -- has gotten a mere 7000 commitments for a stadium with 80,000 seats. Perry's website managed to "lose" the page listing the invited speakers (the rally expressly limited its speaker list to "Born Again" types - no Catholics, Unitarians, Jews or Moslems need apply). Perry himself has begun to waffle on whether or not he will get on the stage with these preachers. Of the 49 other Governors invited, 48 declined the invitation. The Houston weather expected for Saturday is 99° (which may be optimistic, today it approached 104º), dry, and very sunny.

About five months ago Perry imposed a statewide Day of Prayer to pray for an end to a drought in east Texas -- not only has that drought persisted, it has expanded to cover nearly the whole state. Let that be a hint as to the efficacy of Perry's praying.

I'm a trogolodyte - so I have a Trek 620 made from Reynolds 531 double butted tubes and stays, Shimano running gear, and it is over 20 years old and works fine. I don't need one of them thar new fangled aluminum or carbon fiber frames Gol Durn it! I just can't buy brake lever hoods anymore because mine are an older design so all I can do is tape them or leave them nude.

That still is a nice bike. Reynolds 531 plain guage or double butted tubing with taper guage forks and stays can be cold set (bent back to shape) whereas the newer lighter heat treated Reynolds tubing is ruined if bent.

My Puch (Austro- Daimler Superleicht) is a hand made 531 DB frame with incredible hand painted pin striping, a forged crown and Campagnolo Super Record componentry. IT is made by a legendary Austrian Arms/bicycle company and is as valuble as my Cenelli which is made from special Columbus DB tubing and Cenelli forged lugs with an intrical forged crown (both bikes have Campy drops)

It was a top knoctch road race bike that is much kinder to my body then the criteriun friendly Cenelli, and I would never sell it.

My oldest bike is a Flying Scot touring machine that is Reynolds 531 DB tubing as well. IT has the old long Campy drops with axle set screws and 27 inch wheels.

It had to be repainted (it's a 1958), but it is a great tour bike, though quality 27 inch tires are now a thing of the past. I usually tour on the Poprad because of the tire problem, and some day I'll get the paint restored.

It keeps my Cenelli copy made in the early 1970s in Mexico City company in the back of my bicycle safe room. It is a Windsor, and that company and Centurion sold those bikes which were marketted to companies back then who needed a top of the line bike but didn't have the means to make them economically. That is going to get a restore job too.

I have other machines, tons of components fom my years as a mechanic and a full set of shop tools. If you need a hard core bicycle addict, look no farther, you are talking to one.

Cool. At one time I was more fanatical about riding than I am now (I need a back adjustment), but my first good bike was an Austro-Daimler (a pretty metallic purple) that I bought in Charleston S.C. in 1979 - Reynolds frame of course. I still miss loading up and going fishing with it. I had one of the first Blackburn Racks and that was a great help. I could strap most of my tackle on the rack and carry the rod in my day pack.

I like Reynolds, and yes my Trek is the older Reynolds 531. I picked it because it has more give than Columbus (and was on sale, and was the best I could afford at the time) and so is an easier ride. Although my old Raleigh made from Reynolds 1020 straight gauge weighed a ton. The frame and angles of the trek are that of a "Day Racer" so it is somewhere between a touring frame with its soft angles and a racing frame with its tighter more rigid angles. It's a good bike for riding a century. It would probably be a good frame for adapting to a "City Bike" with upright bars and nice cushiony seat. I still miss my old Peugeot though (it was my commuter bike to and from work - I still remember the first time I conquered this one hill I had to ride home - man that felt good). I sold it at a loss when I joined the Navy. ;)
