Dieters struggle to lose weight because a lack of nutrition forces their brain cells to eat themselves, making the feeling of hunger even stronger, scientists claim.

Like other parts of the body, brain cells begin to eat themselves as a last-ditch source of energy to ward off starvation, a study found.

The body responds by producing fatty acids, which turn up the hunger signal in the brain and increase our impulse to eat.

Researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York said the findings could lead to new scientifically proven weight loss treatments.

Tests on mice found that stopping the brain cells from eating themselves – a process known as autophagy – prevented levels of hunger from rising in response to starvation.

The chemical change in their brains caused the mice to become lighter and slimmer after a period of fasting, the researchers reported in the journal Cell Metabolism.

Wonder if fasting or hunger strikes damage the brain?

The problem is with so much tasty food, exceeding serving size and under doing exercise in this age of automation and machines.

A joke arose on a C2C discussion: lady ordered a giant pizza, gobbling it up with the aid of aspartame-containing soft drink. Aspartame lowers serotonin which in turn makes you feel hungry.

Should nutrition labels reflect how much we actually eat? The Week – Thu, Aug 4, 2011

Because Americans habitually consume more than the typical "serving size," nutrition labels can mislead more people than they help

Nutrition labels on food packaging are supposed to clarify how healthy various foods are, but their approach is often unrealistic and misleading, according to a new report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The so-called "serving sizes" the labels list are often wildly out of touch with the amount of food that people actually eat. That means consumers who just give labels a brief once-over — without multiplying the nutrition counts by the number of servings in a package — believe they're getting a lot less sodium, fat, and calories than they really are. Here, a brief guide:

How unrealistic are nutrition labels' serving sizes? Very. According to the CSPI, most people would consider a can of soup, for example, one serving. But most soup labels list a "serving" as just one cup — less than half the can. After a quick glance at the label, a consumer who consumes the whole can might believe he's getting 800 mg of sodium, when in fact he's getting more than 1,800 mg. (It's recommended that most people eat a maximum 1,500 mg of sodium a day.)

Is that typical for nutrition labels? Yes, says CSPI director Michael Jacobson. From coffee creamers to aerosol cooking sprays, food products have come under scrutiny by critics for their absurdly unrealistic nutrition labels. "Over the years we’ve looked and laughed at many serving sizes,” says Jacobson, as quoted by The New York Times.

Why are the labels' serving sizes so puny? Many of the serving sizes are based on consumer research dating back to the 1970s, when food portions — and Americans — were less "super-sized" than they are today. The FDA has stated that serving sizes were standardized to make it easier to compare two different brands of soup, for example, in two different sizes of can.

Is anything being done about misleading food labels? It's hard to tell. The FDA, which regulates food packaging, has been somewhat "tight-lipped" about any upcoming changes to nutrition labels, though it's been working on improvements to the labels since 2005.

Comments; Kathryn The reason people eat bigger portions now, is most processed food is now heavily laced with added glutamate. Sometimes you will see it on the label as MSG, but most times they add it in other ways to have a "clean label." They know many people will avoid MSG, so they trick you into eating added glutamate anyway because it makes you eat more, so they sell more. Look up hidden sources of MSG to find out all the different names.

Studies show that increased MSG consumption increases BMI, amount eaten and speed of eating. I believe added glutamate is the main driver of the obesity epidemic.

I had to start cooking all things from scratch because my daughter was diagnosed with a long list of food allergies, and our health and the way we felt improved dramatically. We did not go on a spartan diet either. We had plenty of homemade treats, but I still lost weight just by going off the corporate chow. I noticed that my appetite was down dramatically once off of the corporate chow. It was suddenly easy for me to eat one or 2 cookies instead of 10 or 12.

If you do want to keep eating corporate chow, you should take B6 and Taurine supplements. Excess glutamate can kill cells, but B6 helps your body convert glutamate to other substances. Glutamate is used for signaling in many organs and the nervous system. Taurine works on the opposite receptors as glutamate, so can counteract much wrong signaling that is happening from eating high amounts of added glutamate. The high amounts of added glutamate in the food, can deplete your body of B6 & Taurine because it makes your body have to constantly fight being pushed one way, a way that can kill cells.

If you ever get cancer, definitely stop eating corporate chow. Most cancerous tumors have glutamate receptors, so eating a great deal of added glutamate can cause tumors to grow.

Your best off if you try to eat homemade foods more than store bought or restaurant foods. Even taking the B6 & Taurine won't necessarily make everything better. There's a lot of other non-foods in the food that may cause you health problems.

Based on my experience, if you try to go off of corporate chow for 1 month, you will not want back on it.

One extra thing you should watch out for is malted barley flour in the store bought flour. It also increases glutamate levels, but sounds so fine and natural. Look for flours without malted barley flour in them. They're out there. Just harder to find.

Rh100 The best guide for number of servings in a container is to divide the total calories by 280. That will give you the number of servings. Try it
