Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4- year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

We don't know who replied, but there is a beautiful soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service.

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Love, God

Love, God

Dear God

Why have you made your worshipers such a bunch of groveling stoooooopid nitwits? I mean, as an omnipotent being I figured you'd be a little smarter than creating a race of materialist rubes that have forgotten you gave them free will and freedom.

So God, you're fired. You can't be real and I'm tired of giving you money....plus ODIN!!! thinks you're a big pussy.

Love, Flint

Aw, c'mon. Admit it it's touching. I have cherished every one of my little 4 legged friends and I can understand how this little girl felt. Softy that I am I still tear up when I think of my special little friends - particularly Rags (the bestest dog there ever was) and Tom (the most loving cat I've ever known) and my little princess cat Stormy, and little Tia - whom I called Tiadorable. So, sure she was fed a fairy tale but it was done in the spirit of what some men call Godly.

Remember The White Rose

But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha

Aw, c'mon. Admit it it's touching.

I don't think it's "touching". It's a fairy tale, and it's wrong to teach children fairy tales are truth.

Ask any Catholic (Christian), they know (believe) animals don't have a "soul". Ask any Buddhist or Hindu and they'll tell you animals are but an intermediary incarnation to oneness with "god"

We need to worry more about what is happening in this life, now, and worry less about what if anything awaits us in the next one.

...it's wrong to teach children fairy tales are truth.

On one level I agree and on another I don't. I'm not ambivalent and I agree with the basic ethics, but on the other hand giving comfort to a little girl brings out the softy in me.

As for different religions and their dogma that is a tough philosophic question. I try to avoid criticizing others beliefs except when they are clearly destructive. I'm not a Catholic so while there are some elements of their philosophy I agree with there are things I disagree with as well. Oh, and you were right on Hindus but that is not a Buddhist belief, or at least not as it was at its inception as created by Buddha. There has been a lot of twisting of his philosophy since by others, but Buddha, in his own lifetime, NEVER claimed Godhood saying instead that he was a man like any other.

No, you're either schizo, stupid or simply incapable of truth.

You cannot agree and disagree and not be ambivalent unless your own emotional arrested development has forced you to deny the truth on yet another issue.

Do you actually believe that (in addition to the Jooish question) another lie that cannot be immediately disproved is the same as the truth?

In your world absent of moral absolutes your warm and fuzzy PC thinking must have made you very popular over at Goldi's at least until you forgot the prime directive, no doubt while trying to straddle two fences just as you've done many times here.

Snopes says this is a true story. However, it is a story that is five years old. So this is an echo of the original story, ricocheting around the internet, now recycled onto Facebook.

These stories, both true and false, are often recycled for years. I think people are still flooding that little post office in Britain with postcards for the dying cancer boy, despite the fact that he didn't die, was cured, and is now about thirty.

According to Cary Clack of the San Antonio Express-News, the tale is real. In mid-August 2006, the San Antonio family of Greg and Joy Scrivener and their three children suffered the loss of Abbey, their 14-year-old black and white dog. Driven by concern for their pet's future welfare, 4-year-old Meredith, the Scriveners' middle child, dictated the note quoted above to her mother, then enclosed it and two photos of the family dog in an envelope addressed "To: God in Heaven." This envelope, bearing the family's return address, was dropped into a mailbox at the Brook Hollow post office.

Aw, c'mon man, this is a good thing! Now that this little girl "knows" that God is taking care of her doggie, she's just one whackjob, zioNutter preacher away from being convinced that God wants her to pick up a government rifle and kill little children halfway around the world because "they're going to wipe Israel off the face of the map."
