As Britain grapples with days of violent looting, Americans worry that riot fever could soon cross the pond

Riots, irrational violence, and hedonistic looting devastated London for the better part of a week, slapping Britons awake to disturbing truths about what many consider a historically civil society. Now, many Americans are wondering if the same thing could happen on this side of the Atlantic. Are such fears founded?

No. Americans would never stand for this: A culture and history of self-reliance would lead ordinary Americans to take matters into their own hands, says Tim Stanley at Britain's Telegraph. Remember when Koreans shot looters during the L.A. riots in 1992? Plus, political leaders like Jesse Jackson would "brave the violence and make a plea for reconciliation." Bill Clinton would cry and hug someone. And a top Republican would insist on "martial law and the summary execution of everyone wearing a hoodie." Seriously though, the riots would quickly subside because "Americans vocalize their issues and their ideas about resolving them." "London riots: Americans would have known how to respond to the violence and looting"

Actually, we're "a spark away" from explosive riots: The London riots are eerily similar to those in Los Angeles in 1992, says Bill Boyarsky at Truthdig. And the conditions appear right for the same thing to happen again. In both cases, community anger boiled up after a racially-tinged episode, and evolved to encompass widespread frustration over a poor economy and socioeconomic disparities. Similar conditions in the U.S. today are causing social tensions "just below the surface in poor minority neighborhoods," just waiting to be "ignited by a spark." "America is a spark away from riots of its own"

Indeed, we've already seen troubling previews : In the past few months, relatively small youth mobs "wreaked havoc" in cities like Philadelphia, Milwaukee, and Cleveland, says Kevin Dolak at ABC News. These incidents indicate that "unrest could spread to America." In Milwaukee alone, a group of 1,000 youths used social networks to organize the disruption of the Wisconsin state fair. And with a "bleak economic outlook" and "deep distrust of the government" growing, watch out. "Riot fear: Could U.K.-style destruction happen in America?"

Angry Bird: I like future histories, so I'm reposting this.

2012. A backlash against black unemployment costs Obama the election, but very narrowly. Then it emerges that Florida, South Carolina and Texas all had vote rigging incidents. The left howls for justice and takes to the streets in Chicago, southern California and New York. One troubled Chicago youth flings a firebomb at police. He and three of his black friends are shot dead in response. Overnight, Los Angeles, Atlanta and large parts of Michigan erupt into full scale rioting. To calm tensions, the national guard is immediately deployed in fifteen cities, and a state-by-state election recount is announced.

The rumor is started that the white house is manipulating the recount; right wing militias, already enraged that Obama is still in office for the duration of the recount, take to the streets and start gunning down government officials, blacks, and anyone who questions their actions, shouting "No Welfare State!"

Within a week, Atlanta has nearly repeated history by being Sherman'd to ash by its own population, NYC is under armed curfew, with deaths in the high hundreds and a street situation that looks more like Port Au Prince, and a radical right group has crashed a light plane full of explosives and anthrax into the White house, causing chaos in DC that Islamists have only dreamed of. And then someone in congress makes the mistake of announcing that in the absence of a clear contender for the office of the president, Biden will assume control of the military "for a short time".

The rumor starts that Biden will have them march on American cities within 24 hours. Soros is found murdered; so are members of the Bush family. The internet is taken down for 48 hours to halt rumors and leaks; no one ever finds out which party or organization arranged it, but the result is a tipping-point in panic. Markets crash in a fashion not even seen in 1929, and terrified people take to the streets in indiscriminate violence in every American city. ...

I'm pretty sure this could not happen. Not here, not even with the current politics of hate we have. But when I ask myself WHY it could not happen... I don't have an answer. I hope you all do.

Bill: Of course they can happen here,,,,emotions are contagious. The American economy is more focused on, and more concerned about, the stock market and the wellbeing of the wealthy than it is on jobs for middle class people, the poor, and people with no means of achieving the American Dream. When some are designated as irrelevant and unimportant the seeds for discord are sown and nourished.

Catnip 3Thumbs Give me a break! I drive a 10-year-old "economy" type of car. I do not have everything I want. I work 40 hours a week and yet getting health care is a struggle for me because the company I work for won't give health insurance. So if I cannot afford something health-related, I suffer until I can save the money for it. And yet I would never CHOOSE to commit a crime, and I certainly would not CHOOSE to go looting. The people that CHOOSE to loot are just low-life criminals. No matter how much more you give them for free, they will only keep saying they want more, more, more.

Stella G: The U.S. would never allow this? Is the writer of this piece aware of all of the mob/gang action/attacks in cities all over the country, in all areas at any time of the day? New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Milwaukee to name a few. Sadly almost all are black-against-white attacks. There is a perceived have/have-not race war brewing - and coupled with the economy plus the idiocy in Washington (especially with the Tea Party setting up a culture of rich and poor with no middle class, what happened in London is inevitable here in the U.S. It is just a matter of time, and anyone who does not see this has their head in the sand.

London riots: Could they happen in the U.S.?

They could happen anywhere, Even in Red China. ;)

"London riots: Americans would have known how to respond to the violence and looting"

In London, people are not allowed to be armed. Here, the thugs would be shot on sight.

Here there would be increased likelihood that the rioters themselves would be heavily armed.

That is an interesting point you make there, Shoonra.

I would say in response to that, that while the have-nots in this country have access to arms, they most probably are not as well armed or proficient at using arms as are the average middle class gun owners. I've yet to see the underclass, if you will, practicing at the gun range on a Saturday afternoon.

What I might fear in the case of mass unrest is what urban gangs and the satellite groups allied with the cartels might do. I'll tell you this, though: My feeling is that whatever they get up to, they will find themselves outnumbered and outgunned.

It is a violation of Natural Law to use this document in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

The FAL is one of the few rifles which is not in the safe. I was always a crack shot with it, at, say, 250-300 yards. ;)

This is what needs to happen along with all the neocons. If riots do breakout in the near future, the rioters need to control the airports so none of the scum can escape what they have brought on themselves. All of DC needs to be brought to justice. Dual citizenship won't mean squat when they can't go back home to the Middle East.
