Title: Laptop doesn't recognize any .exe files

My son has a Toshiba Satellite L305 laptop running Windows Vista. I don't know what he did but the system does not recognize .exe files, therefore no application works and I can't even reinstall Windows. I'm assuming he has a virus but cannot prove it since AVG won't run. I also tried to install Ubuntu, but the computer will not recognize the .exe file to open infra recorder. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can fix this problem I would appreciate it.

Have you tried rebooting the machine into safe mode as an Administrator to see if it does the same thing?

Yes, that did it! I can now run everything. I'm now doing a system restore from a couple of days ago just to make sure. Then I will run AVG and Ad-aware. If this is a virus I don't understand why my AVG didn't pick it up. It updates and runs everyday automatically. I'm still thinking of installing Ubuntu though. My son says he doesn't mind and it's supposed to be tons better than Vista.

We use AVG at work but we also use McAfee and Kaspersky as well as Malware-bytes. It seems like AVG misses quite a few that the others catch.
I've got a Toshiba Satellite C655 running Windows 7 and Webroot antivirus along with Windows Defender and I've picked up two viruses/malware so far (Geek Squad fixed them at Best Buy) and I'm currently running at a restore point due to some current shenanigans until I can run it by Best Buy AGAIN. Hmmmm....
I'm going to put Ubuntu Linux on it so hopefully I won't have to worry too much about viruses anymore. That is IF I can find the damned temporary folder so that I can use the .iso file. It's not in the same place as Windows XP. It's starting to piss me off. LOL!

Really? Hmm. I'll have to look into doing that for my desktop (running XP). I thought AVG was the best one out there. I may say the hell with it though and just put Ubuntu on it like I am my son's laptop.

Just be sure that the AVG is updated. I just spent some time updating my '05 version. gak
