Was the earth previously populated? According to the seven days the earth was made in Man was made on the sixth day. Then their was the 7th day of rest. And it wasn't until after that Adam was made. As I have been told in study groups the distinction of difference is that Adam (and all after him ) had soul where as the previous unnamed man did no. God breathed life into Adam after he made 6th man. At least thats how the lesson went down when I was doing bible study.
