Do ctors to make more house calls?

Ontario's Liberals are promising to bring back medical house calls for some Ontario residents if re-elected.Ontario's Liberals are promising to bring back medical house calls for some Ontario residents if re-elected. (The Canadian Press)Ontario's Liberals are promising a $60-million plan for medical house calls for those with mobility issues or severe illnesses.

It's part of the party's bid to court Ontario voters prior to the Oct. 6 election.

"House calls are coming back to Ontario, so anyone who has difficulty getting to appointments will be cared for right in their homes," said Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Deb Matthews.

In the comments, though, CBC Community member skotydaley wanted to "clarify some points."

"Physicians do make house calls now. Many of the house calls would be made in assisted living facilities where they might have several dozen patients. Most physicians will also do the occasional house call to a palliative patient.

"What they are talking about is increasing the amount a physician can bill to make the house call.

"Consider that having a physician leave an office to drive out to see one patient is probably the least efficient way to deliver health care. It would be more efficient to pay someone $20/hour to pick up disabled people in a specialized vehicle to bring them to the doctor's office than it would be to pay the doctor the $200+ hour required to make a house call economical to a physician who has to continue running his office and paying overhead when he is away.

"This is a horribly inefficient use of resources. We need first to fix the family doctor shortage before we start taking those same physicians out of the office on a routine basis."

Would you want to see an expanded house call system in your province? Would you or someone in your family make use of homecare visits from a doctor? Let us know in the comments below.

Seems a stupid idea which only could come from politicians but half (44%) of those voting in a CBC online poll favor a return to a yesteryear practice. "Quality" of the CBC audience must be deteriorating just like the network's programming.

Makes no sense at all for doctors, already in short supply, to waste time traveling, in traffic jams. Much better for patients to travel to doctor's clinic where specialized equipment is available and techs can do any needed tests.
