'You're going to jail and will never see your parents again': What children aged SIX were 'told after being handcuffed for talking in class'

By Laurie Whitwell

Last updated at 9:56 PM on 31st August 2011

A primary school security guard handcuffed a group of first-grade children for hours and told them they would go to jail for talking in class, a lawyer has alleged.

Carver Primary School security officer David Allen also taunted the six- and seven-year-olds by saying they would 'never see their parents again', according to attorney Michael Carin, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Mr Carin is the lawyer for a family suing Chicago Public Schools over the alleged 'reckless' detention, which has left their son with 'permanent' and 'personal' injuries.

In a lawsuit filed on Monday in Cook Country Circuit Court, LaShanda Smith accuses the officer of acting 'in conscious disregard' of her son's safety. She is seeking more than $100,000 in damages over the incident.

Yesterday it emerged that the boy was just one of many who were allegedly reprimanded in such a way.

In an email to the Chicago Tribune, Mr Carin said school officials at Carver Primary School on the city's far South Side authorised the on-campus security guard in March 2010 to discipline some first-graders who were being disruptive.

Giving the Tribune details not disclosed in the filed complaint Mr Carin said Mr Allen removed the students from class and held them in another office on campus where there were no other adults present.

Mr Carin said the students were handcuffed for hours and told that 'they were going to prison and would never see their parents again'.

'There appears to be no reason for an officer to isolate 6- and 7-year-old children, place them in handcuffs and threaten them for hours during a school day, or any other day,' Carin wrote to the Tribune.

He said the Chicago Board of Education had ignored attempts to resolve this case outside the courtroom.

'Unfortunately, we had to file a lawsuit because the Chicago Board of Education ignored my client on the day of the imprisonment and every day thereafter,' Mr Carin told the Tribune. 'We hope the Chicago Board of Education acknowledges its responsibility and resolves the matter quickly.

n the complaint Ms Smith, describes the guard's action as 'reckless' and said her son suffered injuries both 'permanent' and 'personal'.

Campus officials are accused of providing 'untrained and unqualified persons for the tasks of disciplining, restraining, controlling and ensuring the safety of students'.

CPS, along with the Board of Education, are defendants in the case. Neither the security officer nor school administrators are named as defendants.

CPS spokeswoman Becky Carroll said yesterday that school officials have not yet seen the complaint and need to review it before commenting.

Who knew hiring gang members on prison release could have turned out so badly? I wonder if Illinois regrets firing all those convicted sex offenders. ?

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON THERE?

Obviously, the security officer ran out of tiny handcuffs......if only he had a tazer to shock those criminal first graders into submission, then he would not have had to cuff 'em for hours.

It's really sad that parents are sending to schools such ill-mannered children who cannot restrain themselves when something pops into their heads that they must convey to someone else, not having been taught to hold a thought until the class is over. That security guards have to be brought in to help a teacher with discipline issues illustrates the depths of irresponsibility to which American "families" have sunk as well as further illustrating why academic achievement is so far below what's possible and finally why societies like China where classroom behavior is tightly controlled and promoted with a reward system will soon surpass the West.

Or it may be an indication of a completely INCOMPETENT teacher and/or INCOMPETENT administration. Either way, a security guard who cuffs and threatens six and seven year old children indicates an even greater depth of incompetency regarding the staff in this particular school.

Yeah, imagine 6 year old kids having a hard time being quiet, what is their problem!. I am sure they recommended that all these kids be drugged with Ritalin like drugs to make them more submissive and sedated. After all, the more kids drugged equals more money for the school from pharmaceutical companies. What is going on in the USA today is no accident, it was planned decades ago.

Texe Marrs is right, they think of us as their slaves and as animals to do with what they like.

Teacher competence crossed my mind but then if you're a competent person and can work at something else why would you subject yourself to an exasperating and depressing atmosphere even with a few boorish tykes in a class? As I indicated, in China teachers take no guff in class:

"The death of a nine-year old from injuries inflicted by a teacher in Heilonjiang province in 1995, focused attention on the use of corporal punishment—which is officially banned but still practiced—in Chinese schools. The child fell into a coma after being beaten on the head with a birch rod after failing to get 100 percent on a test. In an interview after the incident the teacher told a local television station, "There is no better method I have found to discipline kids."

Also, teachers are held in much higher regard in China:

BEIJING, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Li Changchun Monday joined an evening gala which was held to celebrate the country's 27th Teachers' Day which falls on Sept. 10.

Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, presented awards to 10 "role-model teachers" selected by Chinese netizens during the gala which was themed "beautiful soul."

Li encouraged teachers to follow the examples of awarded ones and abide strictly by teachers' professional ethics and academic morality.

He also urged teachers to educate and affect students by knowledge and personality.

The gala, including singing and poem-chanting, told stories of excellent teachers who dedicated themselves to students.

The Ministry of Education initiated an annual online election of "role-model teachers" last year.

During this year's quarter-long election, 10 teachers stood out among the 64 candidates.

China now has 17 million teaching staff.

Because the work is rewarding and altruistic to a greater degree than most other options. Think about a drop of water in a pool and the ripple effect. A good teacher makes a positive ripple for students individually and for society......however, a bad teacher does the same with a negative ripple. If the atmosphere is "exasperating" and "depressing" look to the teacher as the common denominator. I know none that do it for the money.

Personally, I think the main problem in our schools isn't that there is too little corporal discipline, but too much liberal mindset. They all need to be mediocre here in the USA, can't have those brighter students separated into brighter courses. Can't place the slower paced learners together either, nope need to bring the entire class down to their level. No matter how much they push all the same, students aren't all the same.

China tracks students.......not all are intended to go to college and they do not dumb down the lot of them so that they all can get in.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters." ~ Ben Franklin

"For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth, to know the worst, and to provide for it.” ~ Patrick Henry

And how was that monstrous murderer punished for that? -- or is that part of China's population control program?

That's really the wrong question to ask and largely irrelevant since the kid is now dead.

What we need to know/find out in such cases is what precise conditions/circumstances precipitated the vicious attack. Presumably the teacher really made an effort to teach the subject and all the other tykes scored 100%. This lone laggard "ruined" the teacher's attempt at perfect performance of her classes. What was her goal, state of mind/physiological condition prior to attack? Was the victim a class clown or had exhibited some other disrespect or obnoxious behavior which was a contributing factor in the teacher's unrestrained beating? Once we have this and much more data we can come up with advisories for teachers and students as to how such tragic situations can be avoided.

Laws and punishment are a simplistic, knee-jerk reaction which go only part way to preventing tragedies. Conditioning people about social behavior, explaining reasons for it would be more effective.
