War, War, War See other War, War, War Articles Title: 'Wars, main obstacle for US economy' The US could have solved its debt and unemployment problems if it had not spent billions of dollars waging wars, a US author has told Press TV in an interview. The giant obvious thing that has gone wrong which nobody will talk about in the US media is that we have put all of our investment into the military and the wars, said David Swanson, author of War is a lie, on Wednesday. Swanson added that if money would have instead been invested into other industries, some 30 million new jobs would have been created. So in one sense, we do not have a debt problem or an unemployment problem; we have a political problem and we have a war problem, he said. Furthermore, Swanson's remarks come as The Washington Post and ABC News recently conducted a poll, which illustrated that 35 percent of Americans believe they have become worse off financially under US President Barack Obama's administration. The poll, which was published on Monday, revealed that only 20 percent of those surveyed believed that the US is heading towards the right direction, while 77 percent believed the opposite. This comes as the US had last week announced that August was the first month of zero job creation since 1945. Some experts have said that with the current pace of job creation, the US will not be able to reach its pre-recession level of overall employment until 2017. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan has cost over USD 1 trillion in taxpayers money. Some experts, however, estimate indirect costs such as interest on the additional debt will exceed the direct costs.
