That was cool as hell. There's an obscure early Jimmy Stewart movie from around that time called Speed that has a lot of old auto assembly footage in it. Stewart portrays a test driver for an auto company, goes to Indy, crashes, then goes to Bonneville and crashes, gets the girl though. Enjoyable if you can find it.

Very cool, lots of steel and iron for durability in those cars. Here are those cars 70-something years later:

My father has a video of a Dodge factory from the early 20's, there are scenes in it that would make any OSHA inspector cringe. There's one machine, a press of some sort, that is in constant motion. The workers are feeding in sheet metal and pulling out the stamping as the machine runs, one can only imagine the number of injuries on a job like that. I was also amazed that they didn't have any way to spray on the paint, they were applying it with mops, essentially.

a moment of silence for the Crown Victoria

Last Ford Crown Victoria rolls off the line

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The last Ford Crown Victoria rolled off a Canadian assembly line Thursday, marking the end of the big, heavy Ford cars that have been popular with taxi fleets and police departments for decades.

Since 1979, almost 10 million Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars -- so-called Panther Platform vehicles -- have been sold.

The Crown Victoria and its cousins have been popular with fleet users because of their roominess, legendary ruggedness and relative simplicity.

Most cars today are built with so-called unibody engineering in which the body sides and roof play a role in keeping the body rigid. The Panther Platform vehicles were engineered with an old-fashioned body-on-frame design that's mostly used by pickup trucks today because, while heavier, it's better able to bounce back from heavy, punishing use.

"You couldn't kill it no matter what you did to it," Ford spokesman Octavio Navarro said of the Crown Victoria.

The automaker has started producing the specially designed Taurus Police Interceptor to replace the Crown Victoria that had been America's most popular police car.

I noticed only one slightly overweight person in the video. I found that to be interesting.

I once took a tour of the Chrysler transmission plant in Kokomo, it averaged about 120 degrees in February.

In the movie Speed that I mentioned above, the big Hamilton 901 sheet metal stamping presses were like that. Not only were they feeding the stock in while running, they'd lube the parts with paint brushes while the press was coming down. Manly stuff back then.

Check out this footage between 0:21 and 0:31. It's a hot drawing operation for making copper wire. About 40 years ago my dad knew a guy who worked at the Phelps Dodge wire plant here and I got to go through it. That wire goes through those dies at about 90mph and the guys have to catch it with their tongs and refeed it. I'd swear that's the plant I was in, but they probably all look pretty much the same.
