It's a controversy that has created turmoil in Britain.

For centuries it was widely assumed that it took three minutes to boil the perfect boil egg. It was a fact backed by several A-list chefs. A piece of wisdom that every decent Englishman and Englishwoman stood by. I may be going out on a limb here, but it was darn near part of the national character.

So you can imagine the reaction when British TV cook, Delia Smith, announced that six minutes -- not three -- is the optimal time to boil an egg. Suffice it to say, it has shaken the very foundations of British society.

To resolve the issue -- and prevent a possible civil war -- the Royal Society of Chemistry enlisted the help of a group of students from Sherborne Girls' School.

Iram Hasan was one of the students involved with the egg project. We reached her on her cell phone at Sherborne School in Sherborne, England.

It depends on whether you want it hard boiled or soft boiled. 4 minutes for soft boiled seems about right.

Are you talking about a soft-boiled egg, or a hard-boiled egg? I worked in a restaurant that had such eggs on their menu via Cobb salad. The chef would only allowed an egg that had been been boiled for 10 minutes.

My husband used to make eggs on toast. I think he did his for 3 minutes. Very good. I'm going to have to talk him into making them again.

Listen to the audio interview at the link for details and report back your answer. Audio doesn't work well on my dial-up.

Eat eggs raw with whey protein, Greek yogurt, Keifer, almond milk, coconut milk and a frozen banana, from your blender. Blended with lots of ice, it makes a great "milk shake." Pick a different frozen fruit each day.

I add a couple dashes of Bragg's vinegar and a couple dashes of sea salt to the water to raise the boiling point, then put in the eggs and bring the water to a full boil. Then I turn off the heat, cover the pot and wait ten minutes before cooling and peeling.
