Authorities foiled a plot that was directed by factions of the Iranian government to bomb the Israeli and Saudi Arabian embassies in Washington and a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States, Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday at a press conference.

The criminal complaint, which unsealed in federal court in New York City Tuesday, identified the two alleged plotters as Manssor Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri, both with ties to Iran, Reuters reported. Arbabsiar has been jailed in New York since September and Shakuri remains at large.

Holder called the alleged plot was a "flagrant violation of US and international law" and the U.S. will hold Iran accountable.

Arbabsair, a naturalized U.S. citizen who holds an Iranian passport, allegedly expressed disregard for the collateral damage that the attacks in Washington would have caused.

Israel & Iran: Double standards on nuclear weapons

Israel has nuclear weapons, perhaps as many as 400 of them. The Federation of American Scientists (see www.fas.org) puts the number at between 100 and 200.

The fissile material for these weapons was mainly plutonium from a nuclear reactor supplied by France in the late 50s and situated at Dimona in the Negev Desert.

However, it is generally believed that nuclear material was stolen by Israeli agents from the US, the UK and France in the 1960s and transported to Israel by covert means (see Annex A). The most notorious instance was the theft of 200 pounds of enriched uranium from the US nuclear facility in Apollo, Pennsylvania, with the alleged help of its American director, Zalman Shapiro.

Israel’s weapons stockpile today includes warheads for mobile Jericho-1 and Jericho-2 missiles, and probably for submarine-launched cruise missiles, as well as nuclear bombs for delivery by aircraft. The Jericho-1 is reckoned to have a range of up to 750km, the Jericho-2 up to 1500km (though some estimates put it as high as 4000km).

In the 1990s Israel took delivery of three German-built diesel-electric submarines, two of which were a gift from Germany. It is thought that they are capable of launching nuclear-armed Popeye Turbo cruise missiles with a range of up to 350km and that at any time, two of the vessels remain at sea – one in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, the other in the Mediterranean – and a third is on standby.

There is little doubt therefore that Israel is capable of striking any part of the Arab world and at Iran with nuclear weapons. It may even be capable of striking London and Washington.

Double standard

Iran has no nuclear weapons. It’s not clear that it ever had plans to develop nuclear weapons. But it is now being threatened with dire consequences by the US and Europe for failing to reveal precisely what it is doing in the nuclear area. By stark contrast, nobody says boo to Israel, which has had nuclear weapons since the late 60s, and has now got a fully functional arsenal pointing at its neighbours including Iran.

Seven good reasons not to bomb Iran, or threaten Iran with bombing

Bombing Iran's openly declared and safeguarded facilities won't stop Iran's nuclear program. It will simply drive the program underground while creating or hardening Iran's resolve to pursue nuclear weapons in secret.

Bombing an open and declared facility that is enriching uranium to low levels under full IAEA safeguards would constitute a lawless act of agression that would isolate the United States and Israel, not Iran.

Bombing Iran would cause massive civilian casualties, fortify the current regime in power and rally the Iranian people around the flag -- against the United States.

Bombing Iran would unleash chaos throughout the region, putting our troops' lives at risk and undermine the war on terror.

Bombing Iran would undermine the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Bombing Iran would be premature, to put it mildly.

I have long said that I don't care if Iran pursues nuclear arms. They are under constant threat by Israel, who does have nuclear weapons, so why aren't they entitled to even the playing field???

Israel wants to make it a big deal and push us into fighting their war(s). Screw them. Can you imagine how different this country would be without the Israel lobby and all the joos in control in D.C?

Of course, Israel plans on attacking Iran with its own nuclear weapons. I wonder if Mordecai Vanunu is still in prison in Israel for blowing the whistle on the Israeli WMDs? I've been out of action for a while, but I know he was given 20 years in an Israeli prison for blowing the whistle on the Israeli WMDs.

If this is the false flag we have been expecting, it's very transparent around the edges. If the U.S. wants to get Russia and China on board at the U.N. Security Council re: sanctions or military actions against Iran, Obama will be sadly disappointed.

It looks like we WILL be fighting Israel's war against Iran, with Thunder clouds gathering over Russia, China, and Pakistan, all of whom have nuclear weapons. Germany too, has been getting cosy with China.

I've been watching Wolf Blitzer escalating this story and putting his spin on it to exploit it's fear and dramatic potential.

BTW, the latest on the attack at the Pentagon on 9-11 was that it was a cruise missile that hit, not a commercial aircraft. Think about it. Where was all the debris from an airliner?

OTOH, Ahmedinejad was a naughty boy at the U.N. His speech was highly critical of America and he pretty well predicted that he would be vilified for it. He mentioned how he had been crucified in the press for his previous speech at the U.N. when he called for the elimination of the Zionist Regime from the face of the map.

This might all be a childish tit-for-tat to show Ahmedinejad that in a war for status and reputation in the world of public relations, America will always win.
