Here's a quick and easy way to decide if you're cut out to be a forensic scientist; flip over your keyboard and shake. If not immediately disgusted by the detritus and DNA that comes sprinkling down, congrats! CSI Milwaukee can use you!

And the rest of you? Take heart. Because revolting, bulky and breakable keyboards could soon be a quaint memory when the last vestige of the typewriter is replaced by lasers and sensors. The Celluon Magic Cube is among the first wave of virtual keyboards to hit the market, a device that projects keys of light on to any flat surface, interprets your finger-tapping and sends each p and q to any Bluetooth device. You can find me on Twitter @BillWeirABC.

Comments: Isnt Christ: Physical keyboards are much more effective than this sort of thing and they work better for human fingers. The "push" is both satisfying and useful to the human finger when typing. You are much more effective with a real keyboard. This is why so many people rely on auto-correct with their smartphone touch-screen keyboards.

am dictating this post via Dragon naturally speaking version 11. Anybody who thinks they can type faster than they can talk should try this. They dropped the price to about 75 bucks from 100. The headset they give you is cheap however. I'm using a lapel mic from RadioShack and it works like a champ. The future of word processing is in voice recognition technology, which really works for me because I can't even read my own handwriting, let alone figure out how to spell stuff like: chrysanthemum, architect, antidisestablishmentarianism and anything else. Just say it and let the computer figure out how to spell it. Dragon Rocks!

alphanumeric characters Maybe, but what about when you don't want everyone around you hearing what you're dictating. How does it work where there is a lot of background noise?

I agree. We're all conditioned to type on keys that are above the table/desk surface, and the physical feel of keyboard under our fingers will be missed very quickly. With a virt keyboard, you'll need to look at the keys to know where they are which is quite inefficient. Perhaps it has a nitch use, such as in temporary situations, but other than that, I can see this tech serving some other purpose besides as a keyboard replacement.
