MJ Rosenberg Last Modified: 16 Oct 2011 10:12 inShare Some far-right conservatives are labelling the Occupy Wall Street protesters as 'anti-Semitic' based on an anti-Semitic assumption that Jews run Wall Street and the global banking system [GALLO/GETTY] An ugly old tradition is back: Exploiting anti-Semitism to break the backs of popular movements that threaten the power of the wealthiest one per cent of our population. It is being used to undermine the Occupy Wall Street movement, which has conservatives in a state of near panic. I don't know the first time the tactic was used, although it dates back almost to the beginning of the Jewish diaspora. Perhaps its most famous use was by the viciously anti-Semitic Czar Nicholas, whose supporters concocted the Protocols of the Elders of Zion at the start of the 20th century to prevent Russians from joining socialist movements and other reform efforts that were fighting to get the czar to cede some power to an elected parliament. The Protocols were a forged document purporting to show that a cabal of Jews met regularly to solidify their supposed control of the entire world. According to the Protocols, Jews were behind socialist and liberal movements but also ran the banks and Wall Street (A modern version of this ridiculous theme was a staple on Glenn Beck's television programme that ran on Fox News until being cancelled this summer). The Protocols have had a long life, used by the czar, the Nazis, and even today by extremist and fringe Muslim groups opposed to the existence of Israel. Dangerous goals But they were primarily used not so much against the Jews as against reform and revolution. Linking a progressive movement to the Jews would destroy progressive movements and preserve the power of those in control. Perhaps not surprisingly, a bizarre variant of this phenomenon is now being deployed against Occupy Wall Street. "... A lot of those people on Wall Street are Jewish. " - Rush Limbaugh Because utilising anti-Semitism directly would not succeed in this country today, the reactionary defenders of the economic status quo are using the flip side of the coin: The fear of being labeled anti-Semitic. They are accusing Occupy Wall Street of anti-Semitism, relying on the old myth that Wall Street is Jewish and hence that opposition to Wall Street's agenda is just opposition to Jews. Not surprisingly, the first right-wing commentator to use this formulation in the Obama era was Rush Limbaugh. In 2010, Limbaugh told his radio audience that Jews might be having "buyer's remorse" about having voted for President Barack Obama because "[h]e's assaulting bankers. He's assaulting money people. And a lot of those people on Wall Street are Jewish." The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemned those remarks, labelling them a "new low" for Limbaugh. ADL National Director Abe Foxman explained that Limbaugh's references to "Jews and money" were "offensive and inappropriate". Foxman continued: "While the age-old stereotype about Jews and money has a long and sordid history, it also remains one of the main pillars of anti-Semitism and is widely accepted by many Americans." Age-old stereotypes And now the "age-old stereotype" is back, flipped on its head by right-wingers who seek to discredit Occupy Wall Street by accusing it of anti-Semitism, an accusation based on the idea, as Foxman said, "widely accepted by many Americans", that Wall Street is Jewish. One of the first conservatives after Limbaugh to use this tactic was the usually quite proper Ivy League conservative, New York Times columnist David Brooks. In an October 10 column dismissing the Wall Street protests as "trivial sideshows", Brooks wrote: Click for more of Al Jazeera's special coverage "Take the Occupy Wall Street movement. This uprising was sparked by the magazine Adbusters, previously best known for the 2004 essay, 'Why Won't Anyone Say They Are Jewish?' - an investigative report that identified some of the most influential Jews in America and their nefarious grip on policy." Interesting. Brooks essentially is charging that a magazine few have heard of "sparked" the movement and, even worse, smearing the movement as anti-Semitic by bringing up an article that magazine published seven years ago about the Jewish "grip" on policy. Quite a reach. And then yesterday the Emergency Committee For Israel, a far-right Republican group run by Bill Kristol, issued a video flat-out accusing Occupy Wall Street of anti-Semitism, with side swipes at leading Democrats (what a coincidence!) like President Obama and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who have sympathised with the movement and are therefore, by implication, probably anti-Semitic themselves. The Emergency Committee's evidence is presented in the video, which shows three anti-Semites and two anti-Semitic signs among the protesters. That's it, out of a crowd of thousands. (Far be it from me to guess at the number of anti-Semites who might be at a Tea Party event, but they don't define that movement either. Mass movements attract all kinds of people, some invariably unsavoury.) In any case, the Emergency Committee for Israel is not concerned about anti-Semitism or Israel. It is, rather, dedicated to defeating Democrats and promoting its billionaire donors' economic interests. During the 2010 congressional campaigns, it produced videos almost as deceitful as the Wall Street video that lied about Democratic candidates. It used Israel and Jews as devices to direct money and votes toward the Republicans. In attacking Occupy Wall Street, the Emergency Committee's goal is simply to smear Democrats. If, in the process, it reinforces the stereotype that Jews and Wall Street are interchangeable, so what? How different is that from its usual practice of suggesting strongly that American Jews should vote only based on Israel's supposed interests, not America's? To put it not-so-mildly, the Emergency Committee for Israel does not care about fuelling anti-Semitism in America. Because that last video of a couple of anti-Semites may have left a bad taste in your mouth, here's another one. It was shot at the Wall Street demonstration on Yom Kippur Eve and it features not a few anti-Semites but thousands of Jews celebrating the holiest day of the Jewish year, a day dedicated to the same ideals as Occupy Wall Street: Repentance for putting our desires before the needs of the poor, the homeless, and the exploited. given that persecution makes up such a large part of being jewish, we've got to expect antisemitism.... i mean, if antisemitism didnt exist, jews would invent it. the behavior of the big wheels guarantees that antisemitism exists... which is a good deal for everybody... the big wheels take off with the loot, the little people stay behind and are persecuted, fulfilling their expectations, and everybody's happy. that's the system... if you're jewish, it's sort of like the lottery... hit it big and jet off to buy refuge... or get shat on, whereupon you can whine your ass off... all that whining eventually sucks in enough sympathetic goys that the pattern starts over again. such a deal. looks to me, though, like this neocon project, along with the behavior of israel and wall street and the media, is gonna put a serious dent in sympathy for jews... but that's just part of the pattern, that's how it works... unless this time they've gone too far. gonna be interesting, watching it play out.

i'm pretty certain that anybody reading this thread or the original article is very clear on the meaning of "antisemitism" as it is used by MJ Rosenberg.
you got to admit that once the truth of jewish behavior becomes antisemitic, jews have a problem... but that's how it works. we just got to worry about jews taking themselves so seriously that they no longer understand how the game is played. israel and its nukes, israeli control of america, and 50 years of free lunch have just about guaranteed a shit sandwich.

For some strange reason we are actually nearly in agreement for a change. Also Zionism thrives, or so the leadership believes, on anti-semitism. This goes all the way back to the Godfather of Zionism Theodore Hertzl who wrote in his diaries that European Jews in particular were too comfortably a part of the societies, such as Germany, that they lived in and that it was needful to promote anti-semitism in order to drive European Jews to the Zionist State in Palestine. With Rothschild money behind them they were successful in doing just that, and then when it would have been possible to ransom many of the Jews out of Nazi controlled territory the big schmucks at the top turned their back on them because they believed that a lot of Jews needed to die to create the political climate for the formation of the Rothschild-Zionist State of Israel. As usual it will be the ordinary common man and woman Jew who pays the price for the criminality and callousness of the "big Jews". As for Occupy Wall Street is it a crime to notice and acknowledge that most of the major players at the top of the greatest financial swindle in history are Jewish e.g., Lloyd Blankfein, Timothy Geithner, or Ben Bernancke? It is simply the recognition of a reality, something that however uncomfortable it may make some people happens to be true.
I think we're missing each other on the points. a certain group of people most likely killed 3000 americans on 9/11 as a pretext to start wars so they could establish their "benevolent global hegemony" or tikkun olam by establishing control of world energy supplies. they've lied us into wars and staged financial disasters that provide cover for their looting operations, just in case they fail to achieve their benevolent hegemony by killing hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of people... who knows how many people they're willing to kill to prove, once and for all, that they're the master race? their media is dedicated to obscuring as much of the truth as is possible to obscure. meanwhile, after such an intense effort to hide the truth, americans are reviled as stupid and ignorant by the same people who keep them stupid and ignorant. it is unfortunate that so many of those people belong to a self-defined group, no matter how you define that group.

Yes, of course, here, but I refer to society at large, eh. If you asked people randomly, besides those that didn't have a clue either way which would be a disturbingly higher than it should be percentage, the rest would tell you that to be antisemitic means to be anti-jewish. Then if you asked them to define "semite/semitic" they would tell you that it meant jewish. I think we're missing each other on the points. You are right, most of the ignorant schmucks in the street, particularly the Kristyun Zionits, have no real clue what the word "semite" means. It does NOT mean Jewish. A semite is any member of the peoples speaking any of the languages of the Hamito-Semitic LANGUAGE Group which comprises Hebrew, Arabic, etc., ... In one of those delightfully PC academic changes, no doubt planted to obscure the relationships, the Academy has invented the new term "Afro-Asiatic" to describe the Hamito-Semitic Languages. As a historical side note Alan Bomhard, who devised the new language family name of Afro-Asiatic, was Jewish. I do not know if that has any significance in the reformulation of the language groups or not. I just note it as an interesting factoid. However, you slice it though "Semite" is not even a race it is a language family and people speaking Semitic Languages comprise a wide range of racial characteristics and are not limited to any one specific racial group. However, genetically Palestinian Arabs and Sephardic Jews are genetically indistinguishable.

The Semitic phylum contains some of the most well-known languages to those in western cultures: Hebrew, Arabic, Akkadian, Phoenician, Syriac, and Ugaritic. Others include Amharic, Eblaite, ESA, Ethiopic, Gurage, Harari, Harsusi, Lihyanite, Nehri, Moabite, Punic, Sheri, Soqotri, Tamudic, Tigre, and Tigriña. The Semitic languages are spoken in much of northern Africa and the Near East (see Fig. 1.). It has the most speakers of any of the phyla, in large part due to Muslim conquests of the seventh century (Bomhard 1994:24). Arabic alone has about 100 million speakers. Altogether the 20 or so languages that comprise the Semitic family report around 120 million speakers. An interesting characteristic of Semitic languages is their tie to liturgy. This has accounted for the preservation of ancient records, the oldest of which, written in Akkadian, can be traced back some 5000 years. The Phonecian language, also (as above noted) a member of the Semitic family, is the source of the alphabetical system used in most of the world today. Hebrew and Arabic are also some of the most well-documented of the Semitic languages and of the Afro-Asiatic family.
