Weve all heard the childrens tale that illustrates the fact that the turtle who plods along at an even pace ends up winning the race, compared to the rabbit who gets sidetracked and stops at every 7-11 along the way, but apparently this is not a fictional story when you look at the human race. According to recent research out of Albert Einstein College of Medicine (now thats gotta look good on your resume), those individuals who have a slightly underactive thyroid may actually live longer. In this study, they looked at various factors that may be contributing to why a group of centenarians were still alive and kicking (or at least shuffling). A common denominator in a number of these special people was that their metabolism was slower because of decreased thyroid hormone production. In theory, this slowed metabolism may contribute to longevity simply because these people arent going through their days too quickly. So, the next time you get stuck behind an elderly driver, instead of passing on the inside, maybe you should just slow down and enjoy the ride.
