A damn cute video. Thanks for sharing.

Having lost the DAWG that I grew up with I should tell you that when Benny passes (and it will be soon I suspect) his bladder will empty and that beautiful bedspread may not be salvageable. I can only hope that you have a plastic mattress cover also.

And, as usual Shoonra's stiff necked and unseemly criticism can be safely ignored.

Dad brought ol' Spud (a Beagle who walked kinda sideways because he was hit by a car) home when I was about 5 yrs old, and at 16 I was on the road (my first road trip) with a band. We were in Charleston, SC gigging at The Merchant Seaman's Club, a private, after hours bottle club that anyone but the cops could enter after showing a driver's license, something that undercover cops won't do.

One morning I had the strangest feeling that Spud was gone. (He wasn't sick or anything when I left town two weeks before) A phone call home proved that my eerie sensation was correct.

Poor Benny has a hernia too, I see. And animal companions that age invariably suffer from degenerative joint problems, and their kidneys are prone to failure.

actually, it's not a hernia, it's a fat tumor. I had it and another one biopsied about 3 months ago. The vet and I agree that he is too old to put through the trauma of removing them at this point.

He still has a lot of energy for an old guy, aside from not wanting to get up in the morning.

As far as bladder problems go, he is already experiencing a little leakage if I let him stay in bed too late. I do have a mattress pad on the bed for those occasional leaks. He's been a good friend for a long time, so washing sheets and blanket once in a while is not a big deal.

Benny is so cute!

Fatty tumors come with the years....not to worry. How are Benny's kidneys doing? I put my sweet girl on a homemade diet and that helped with leakage and bought me more time with her. Chronic kidney disease is common in canines, reducing the toxins really helps a lot.

I believe his kidney function is fine. They did blood work on him before the biopsy. The only thing they found was a slight drop in thyroid function. He takes half a pill twice a day for that.

The less visible but much larger fat tumor may be pressing on his bladder. The trouble with that one, according to the vet, is that it is around his femoral artery, and to remove it will be risking his life.

Benny's diet consists of bits of hamburger, steak, roast beef, chicken, beef jerky, turkey, ham, bologna, hot dog, and Blue Buffalo old dog food. lol

Oh yeah, he likes pork fried rice too.

lol......Benny eats better than 2/3's of the planet. : ) Food is one of the great joys for aging hounds and is sounds like Benny is a real joy hound.

I misunderstood on that fatty tumor and didn't realize that they could gather mass around arteries. That does sound worrisome.

It may not be around it, maybe just too near it, I don't know. But the vet did say he didn't want to take it out unless it grows out of control, because of that artery. If they nick it by mistake, Benny probably dies.

Oh yes, he also likes cheese. In fact, I wrap his half pills in a little piece of cheese twice a day.

When a dog gets that old, what else does he have to live for except yummy treats, right?

Here he is at 5 or 6 years old:
