I guess you've never heard the phrase, "Let sleeping dogs lie."

It is vital to understand that there is no truth without discernment and no wisdom without the truth. What then is “faith” but an effort to confound truth and wisdom?

At age 15, this dog has entered old age. He's easily tired, and probably suffers from joint pain and lack of energy & stamina. Wait until you're that close to the end of life and then decide how you like being teased about it.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

In his case, I have no choice sometimes.

But you should see him move for a piece of roast beef!

Yes, Benny is so teased and so abused, I should be in jail. lmao

A damn cute video. Thanks for sharing.

Having lost the DAWG that I grew up with I should tell you that when Benny passes (and it will be soon I suspect) his bladder will empty and that beautiful bedspread may not be salvageable. I can only hope that you have a plastic mattress cover also.

And, as usual Shoonra's stiff necked and unseemly criticism can be safely ignored.

Dad brought ol' Spud (a Beagle who walked kinda sideways because he was hit by a car) home when I was about 5 yrs old, and at 16 I was on the road (my first road trip) with a band. We were in Charleston, SC gigging at The Merchant Seaman's Club, a private, after hours bottle club that anyone but the cops could enter after showing a driver's license, something that undercover cops won't do.

One morning I had the strangest feeling that Spud was gone. (He wasn't sick or anything when I left town two weeks before) A phone call home proved that my eerie sensation was correct.

Poor Benny has a hernia too, I see. And animal companions that age invariably suffer from degenerative joint problems, and their kidneys are prone to failure.

actually, it's not a hernia, it's a fat tumor. I had it and another one biopsied about 3 months ago. The vet and I agree that he is too old to put through the trauma of removing them at this point.

He still has a lot of energy for an old guy, aside from not wanting to get up in the morning.

As far as bladder problems go, he is already experiencing a little leakage if I let him stay in bed too late. I do have a mattress pad on the bed for those occasional leaks. He's been a good friend for a long time, so washing sheets and blanket once in a while is not a big deal.

Benny is so cute!

Fatty tumors come with the years....not to worry. How are Benny's kidneys doing? I put my sweet girl on a homemade diet and that helped with leakage and bought me more time with her. Chronic kidney disease is common in canines, reducing the toxins really helps a lot.

I believe his kidney function is fine. They did blood work on him before the biopsy. The only thing they found was a slight drop in thyroid function. He takes half a pill twice a day for that.

The less visible but much larger fat tumor may be pressing on his bladder. The trouble with that one, according to the vet, is that it is around his femoral artery, and to remove it will be risking his life.

Benny's diet consists of bits of hamburger, steak, roast beef, chicken, beef jerky, turkey, ham, bologna, hot dog, and Blue Buffalo old dog food. lol

Oh yeah, he likes pork fried rice too.

lol......Benny eats better than 2/3's of the planet. : ) Food is one of the great joys for aging hounds and is sounds like Benny is a real joy hound.

I misunderstood on that fatty tumor and didn't realize that they could gather mass around arteries. That does sound worrisome.

It may not be around it, maybe just too near it, I don't know. But the vet did say he didn't want to take it out unless it grows out of control, because of that artery. If they nick it by mistake, Benny probably dies.

Oh yes, he also likes cheese. In fact, I wrap his half pills in a little piece of cheese twice a day.

When a dog gets that old, what else does he have to live for except yummy treats, right?

Here he is at 5 or 6 years old:

When I finally have to say goodbye to benny, I'm going to be destroyed. I may need two weeks off to recover enough to function.

Was Tom a dog?

He probably should have been, but no he was a Maine Coon Cat. Just about the most loving cat I've ever seen. He was my pal.

And I can understand how you might feel when you have say goodbye. I still miss Tom and I still miss my boyhood friend Rags who was the bestest dog that ever lived. He was half Scotty and Half Cocker Spaniel and sharp as a tack. He was a great kids dog and was a fearless protector. I still remember a prowler we had one night and Rags just sat there by the door almost quiet, but you could hear a low growl deep in his throat. When the prowler passed by the window we could see his silhouette outlined by the streetlight in the shade. He tried the door, which was unlocked, but it had a habit of swelling up and sticking so he must have thought it was locked and moved on. However, Rags sat there on guard the entire time never moving from his station by the door.

Excellent recommendation. I had my sweet girl on that from 8 on out and it really kept her moving. Swanson's has a similar product with the same ingredients for a lot less. : )

I got a call last night that a little ol' lady is in need of a foster mom. I'm going to pick her up on Thursday. She's an 11 year old greyhound named Lala. As luck would have it, I will also will be babysitting a six year old named Enzo while his parents are on vacation for 10 days at the same time. Will be nice to have hounds around.

Dwelling on the subject of beloved dog companions makes me want to share my story again:

My wife wanted kids and I wanted a dog.

She won.

"Don't worry, when the kids get bigger they'll probably want a dog too", Wifey said to reassure me.

When the kids grew enough to master the art of mommy manipulation what did they ask for? A KAT! (somebody kill me please)

So, I found a half starved stray kitten in a wildlife area while hunting and I impulsively snatched her up, and I grew to love that nasty ol' cat. Even though she was my daughter's companion, the cat would roll in the mud on my chest waders after a duck hunt, perhaps to remind her of the few weeks she spent as "an apex predator".

She was Queen Of The Delaware wild lands, terrorizing grasshoppers and possibly very small voles and field mice until I captured her. She even partially ate me when I picked her up (the grass was too tall and she couldn't outrun me) when she sank her needle sharp fangs to the bone in my index finger. I brought her home and threw her in a cardboard box prison and after a few bites of tuna my daughter rescued her and the kitten's paws didn't touch the floor for the next six months.

And, for two nights when Mommy was sleeping downstairs on the couch because of a back problem the cat went under the covers, turned around and came back and put her head on mommy's pillow. So we were both under the blanket and facing the same direction with our heads on the pillows until Mommy spotted her and tossed her fuzzy little butt out of the bed.

Even now I want to weep when I think about the vet putting her to sleep.

My daughter still has two cats (or should I write, "her cats have human staff") and they're okay if you like cats. But I haven't had a dog of my own since 1979 and every time I visit folks with a dog that I can mosh with I feel sorry for myself.

It's just not right that a man like me (who all dogs immediately spot as a DAWGGY perthun) doesn't have a dog to love, and to love me back.

I envy you folks.

And if any of you young fellers are thinking about getting married and getting a dog you may want to include the dog promise in the wedding vows. Or better yet get the dog first then get a vasectomy but don't tell the little woman. Then tell her you want to have children right away and lay back and watch the cooperation you'll get.

A Chinese basket job from the ol' lady? Hey, no problem, as long as she doesn't catch on! ;)

Dawg, there are many pups in need of homes right now, many older dogs that folks cannot care for anymore since they have lost a home or a job. It's time you take one in. : )

Little Lala is really sweet. She was scared to death when I picked her up and brought her home yesterday, shaking and literally scared the crap out of her. Poor little thing didn't understand having to leave her human for another. At 11 it's hard to find a new human to take in an old hound due to health issues and fear of loss.....but they still have lots of love to give and are worthy of all you can offer.
