That is real common with those snappers. That is a female, and she is probably in an ugly mood because it's spring and she is away from the water she is in 27/7 to lay eggs. Trying to extract a creature that big, strong, quick to bite from the water is dangerous. I carried one that size home once in Clinton Connecticut and put it in the bathtub. My Mom screamed and was very angry wit me for doing that. Oh well. It made sense to do that when I was 14. ;-)
