Pro-Family Leaders Challenge Walgreens on 'Gay Games' Sponsorship

By Ed Thomas
October 21, 2005

(AgapePress) - A leading national pharmacy and good retailer is saying its participation as a sponsor in the upcoming "Gay Games" in Chicago next year is primarily for engaging in AIDS awareness education and distributing treatment drugs. But the logic of that statement is being refuted by a pro-family organization based in Illinois.

The Illinois Family Institute (IFI) continues to spearhead petition campaigns, encouraging the state's citizens to voice their displeasure with major corporations that are sponsoring the 2006 Gay Games. IFI executive director Peter LaBarbera says if Walgreens -- with its corporate office in Illinois -- is trying to fight HIV, it is counterproductive for them to contribute $100,000 and take part in an event celebrating the unhealthy lifestyle that produces HIV.

"What Walgreens is saying is that this $100,000 gift allow them to dispense HIV drugs at the Gay Games and also to engage in AIDS awareness," LaBarbera explains. "Now first of all, a lot of those AIDS awareness programs are compromised because they promote homosexuality.

"But even if they were effective, we think it's ridiculous to say that you are stopping HIV but at the same time you're celebrating homosexual behavior, which is one of the big causes of AIDS.

"They can dispense HIV drugs," acknowledges LaBarbera, "but they don't have to give to an event which is just celebrating homosexuality in the name of sport."

He also says it is important that Chicago residents call Mayor Richard M. Daley to task for his apparent turnaround on pro-family values and issues -- including agreeing to be co-chair of the Gay Games.

"There was a time when the mayor was pro-life and pro-family -- and his father was certainly pro-family," says LaBarbera, referring to the six-term mayor who died in 1975. "We think it's sad to see Mayor Daly pandering in such an extreme way on this homosexual issue."

Another pro-family group -- the American Family Association -- also takes issue with Walgreens' justification for the financial gift to the Gay Games. AFA contends the donation was made to "placate" homosexual activists, a group it says should already know plenty about AIDS.

"If any group should be aware of the dangers of AIDS and how to prevent it, it should be homosexual activists," says a statement from AFA founder Don Wildmon. He points out that billions of dollars have already been spent to educate the public about AIDS.

Walgreens Gives $100,000 in Support of Gay Games

Let Walgreens know that their $100,000 donation to the 2006 Gay Games is an indication of their commitment to homosexuality and the activities it encompasses.

Walgreens has given $100,000 to help sponsor the Gay Games in Chicago next year.

Oddly enough, Walgreens says they agreed to sponsor the Gay Games under the guise of helping prevent AIDS. But the official Gay Games web site has the following promotional statement, which promotes the very type of activity Walgreens says they are trying to prevent.

"The Gay Games Social Committee is currently in the process of gathering together Chicago's best bars and clubs, and some of the biggest and best party promoters in the country to create a Social Schedule unlike anything you've ever seen. Chicago's LGBT scene is fierce no matter what time of year it is, but during that one week in July 2006, we are committed to making sure you have the time of your life."

The gift, made to placate homosexual activists, puts Walgreens in the very top Premium Category of sponsorship. To make their sponsorship appear to be a good thing publicly, they say they are providing AIDS education. If any group should be aware of the dangers of AIDS and how to prevent it, it should be homosexual activists. Billions of tax dollars have been spent to educate the public about AIDS.

We have acquired photos taken at the last Gay Games that clearly show what kind of activity occurs during these games. To see the photos,

Send a letter to Walgreens, asking them to withdraw their sponsorship.

What's up with Mayor Daley? It's one thing to keep your mouth shut, it's another to be the co-chair. I wonder if he's considering becoming an entrant as well.

Who knows what's up with that guy. He sure has strayed form his upbringing, but I recall loads of corruption that was traceable back to Richie Daley for many years before he became the mayor. It still goes on as far as I know; just business as usual.

As far as him being an entrant, I couldn't say for sure, but I recall meeting his wife a very long time ago back when they still lived in Bridgeport, when I used to do my flower deliveries. She was very pleasant and very pretty.

I can't imagine that Richie Daley would turn into a butt blaster, but we all know they've come out of the closet before and will keep coming out until this trend is reversed.

Daley's kid got himself into some deep trouble some years back and that can only be attributed to similar happenings with the people his kid hung around with. It was drugs or something. Not so unusual considering the drug culture which has been so rampant. All of this boils down to the destruction of family values and good morals.

There was a saying among those who were connected in some way, if you are going to get in trouble, do it in Cook County (so it can be fixed). Richie's kid did it outside of Cook County so it turned into a black mark on the family.

"It is common to assume that human progress affects everyone – that even the dullest man, in these bright days, knows more than any man of, say, the Eighteenth Century, and is far more civilized. This assumption is quite erroneous...The great masses of men, even in this inspired republic, are precisely where the mob was at the dawn of history. They are ignorant, they are dishonest, they are cowardly, they are ignoble. They know little if anything that is worth knowing, and there is not the slightest sign of a natural desire among them to increase their knowledge." H.L. Mencken
