An Iraqi lawmaker from the Sadr group has warned that the movement of US troops from Iraq to Kuwait would be a threat to Iraq and other regional states.
"The presence of the American forces in the region, particularly in the Middle East, is a real confusion in the stability of the security situation in the entire region," Mohamed al-Khafaji said in a statement on Tuesday.
He added that the deployment of US forces in Kuwait would also be a threat to the security of Iraq, Iraq's Buratha news agency reported.
Khafaji noted that Iraqi forces are able to protect the country's borders with the neighboring states.
Last month, US President Barack Obama announced that the last American soldiers would return to the United States from Iraq by the end of December.
The New York Times reported last week that Washington planned to station additional combat troops in Kuwait after withdrawing forces from Iraq by the end of this year.
The US administration is also seeking to expand military ties with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, according to the report.
The size of the standby American combat force to be based in Kuwait remains the subject of negotiations.
