Recent studies and reports have revealed that terminal cancer patients are frequently given harsh chemotherapy drugs and radiation treatments long after they have been diagnosed as hopeless. In many instances such treatments continue up until the moment of death. As a result, many cancer patients are subjected to needless expense and suffering and little time is left for alternative treatments that otherwise might have saved their lives. This March The Oncologist reported that about one in five dying cancer patients are given chemotherapy within 14 days of their deaths. The report also stated that one-third of terminal cancer patients are not sent to a hospice until they have less than three days left to live. Last year, Virginia Commonwealth Massey reported that 25% of Medicare expenses for terminal cancer patients are spent in their final month. A study published last September in the journal Cancer found that radiation treatments were given to 91 percent of dying cancer patients. Half of those patients spent more than 60 percent of their remaining lifespan undergoing radiation treatments and most were unable to complete their treatments because they died. The study also found that rather than reducing pain, most often the treatments actually increased pain. Perhaps those figures help explain some other disconcerting figures about cancer treatment in the United States. For example, the United States spends twice as much per person for cancer care for the same results as other countries that spend less. Another example is the fact that oncologist salaries have increased 86% in the past 10 years even though the number of patient visits has increased by only 12%. Notably, the large majority of most oncologists' income is derived from markups on chemo drugs. Far too often there may be an even darker side to doctors hanging on to cancer patients they had given up on besides the needless suffering and expense: preventing the chance of a cure outside mainstream treatments. Though not recognized by mainstream medicine, natural and alternative cancer treatments are often successful when mainstream medicine has admitted defeat. However, the longer a person is kept on mainstream treatments the less chance they have of finding success with alternative treatments. Radiation destroys the immune system, especially the bone marrow that lies at the very heart of the immune system. It is the immune system which heals cancer and keeps it at bay - not radiation or chemotherapy drugs which merely treat the symptoms (tumors) of cancer. Radiation and chemo alike often inflict major damage on healthy cells and organs, further weakening the body and in many instances causing damage so severe that it ends up killing the patient. In many forms of forms of cancer more patients die of liver and heart failure than are saved by chemo or radiation. Part of the problem is oncologists' reluctance to tell patients if and when they have been diagnosed as terminal. Instead, many patients continue to hear optimistic reports about "response rates", "tumor reductions" and "cancer control", as they have from the outset. Left untold is that their oncologist has determined that their cancers are beyond their ability to control or cure. Another problem is the willingness of insurance companies and Medicare to pay for hopeless treatments long after the doctors have given up hope. The biggest problem, however, is doctors and the cancer industry failing to treat cancer patients as human beings who need and deserve to be told the truth and given proper care instead of treating them as profit centers to be milked of every dollar possible. Yes, a lot of alternative treatments have popped up over the years, but the FDA won't approve them because most of them are relatively inexpensive without the 10,000% mark-up Big Pharma is used to, and Big Pharma controls the FDA it is their enforcement arm to prevent competition. They would literally rather see people die than produce an inexpensive and effective product. There is no money in cures, there is lots of money in "treatments". That is why I do not donate to medical causes - they are frauds. If their research ever turned up a bonafide cure it would be buried in the deepest darkest vault they could find, and if the discoverer protested they would be whacked.

Uh, buck? Whatever your personal feelings about the ongoing fraud of modern "medicine", and I agree it is very often a fraud, you could have a little more mannerly approach and still make your point. The woman just lost her husband whom she loved very deeply. Now I know that might be a foreign emotion to you but try to imagine it.
I was so sorry for your loss. And your statement that sometimes there are no right answers is true enough but sometimes there are some good answers, we just don't find them in time. But I am sure you did all you could and I am sure that most people do anything and everything that they think might help their loved one when they get that awful diagnosis. My dear wife has studied alternative medicine more than most doctors have studied "accepted treatments" (like chemo, radiation, etc.). She found the book I linked to, the one called Outsmart your cancer. And it has information about numerous alternative cancer treatments, many of which are cheap and most of which have actually CURED people of cancer, not just given them a little more time with a poor quality of life. Yes, there are numerous examples of suppressed cancer cures. Harry Hoxsey was curing cancer way back in the early 1900's but most people have never heard of him. How many people do you think have ever heard of Rene Caisse who treated people with some herbs, the formula for which she obtained from an Ojibwa Indian medicine man and which she named Essiac? She cured thousands of people with cancer. The list of practitioners and their treatments could probably fill several pages but I am sure you know all this stuff already. The point is that the establishment does not want any cures for cancer since that would shut off a major supply of money. Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. Thank you. That was one I was trying to remember. To your list you could add Royal Raymond Rife who had cures documented by established M.D.s, but he was bad for profits. Why promote a treatment that costs pennies when you can promote one that costs hundreds of thousands and keeps the patient on the hook until you've milked them dry? Yes, that is sick, but that seems to be the way these ghouls think. And the MDs are either hampered by ego or prejudice (if it worked they would have taught us that in Medical School ergo it is a quack treatment). I see in my ping list that he pounced and is no doubt foaming at the muzzle. I get the biggest kick out of posting a painfully truthful observation about him then easily avoiding his vicious ejaculations! I never read his replies unless someone else quotes him and that rarely happens because his juvenile replies are crawling with clues that reveal the excruciating pain of his wounded ego. He probably doesn't even know that I haven't read a post of his addressed to me in a year or more! That is correct. After all the reading I have done about chemo and radiation "treatments," if some doctor told me I should take one or both of those I would ask him if he was a quack. Why would I take a "treatment" that MAY kill a part of the cancer cells while exposing me to the real risk of their "treatment" actually giving me some other type of cancer? Neal had glioblastoma multiforme and a highly aggressive form of it. The nickname is The Terminator. He wanted to stay and take care of me. He was dead in 23 days, and the only thing that brought him relief was the steroid dexamethasone which reduced brain swelling and ended his intractable headaches and vomiting. He was hospitalized three time during those days and after the first hospital stay, we got 12 days together on our farm with our animals. It was bittersweet, as we knew he was dying. His son flew up to see him on our dollar(another story) and ended up stealing all but 6 of Neal's pain medications. Neal disintegrated each day, and by day 10 he could not turn on a stove or shower. He wanted treatment. I put him on a ketotic diet but he could not eat it. We hoped treatment would shrink the tumors enough to buy us a bit more time. Yes, sometimes in the face of death we are helpless. Sometimes, we must accept our own mortality. Neal died with grace and dignity, and I brought him home to die on his beloved farm so his soul would pass where he was happiest. It was all I could do at the end, and I accepted that. Neal's doctors were all supportive, and compassionate. The neuro-oncologist we saw in Indianapolis was very impressive, she spent hours with Neal working out a way to help him. His oncologist called me last night to see how I was coping. Nice man. I have no anger at any of the doctors who CARED for him, Neal was too ill and the system moved too slow. We are born and we die.

Yes, that is something that we can pretty much count on. Sometimes things have progressed to the point that nothing will work and that's sad but at the end of the day it is something we all have to face. A preacher said one time that you could look in any cemetery you wanted to and you could read the dates of birth and the dates they died and you would find that it ranged all the way from still born to what we think of as old (100 or more) but it comes to us all sooner or later. You seem to be coping well and I am glad if that's the case. Time is a great healer--while the passing of time will never make you forget your loved one it softens the hard edges of the pain and allows you to recall the good times. And none of us are guaranteed a moment beyond the one we're living so we can be thankful for the time we did have with those we loved before their time here was up. And assuming that they were ready to go and also assuming that we are then death holds no sting for we know that we will see them again someday in a better place where there is no more pain and suffering. This is not always the result of a scam by doctors or hospitals, but the result of a positive decision made by the patient and/or his family not to give up even to the last minute. It might also be dictated by pressures to avoid even the slightest appearance of any kind of euthanasia.

Neal died 3 days after his first chemo treatment of a brain hemorrhage. We were desparate. He was going fast, and he wanted treatment. They used Avastin which can cause brain hemorrhage. Sometimes there are no right answers and we are simply helpless.
