Gilles Doré, a lawyer who has represented clients in many high-profile cases, was assaulted outside his home in Outremont Friday night, according to police sources who said the victim was hospitalized with a serious head injury. Doré, who has at least three decades of experience, was temporarily placed in a coma by the doctors who treated him, but he has since come out of it. Montreal police Constable Raphael Bergeron could not confirm the identity of the person who was attacked. As a policy, the police force does not identify the victims of assault. But Bergeron was able to say that a 58-year-old man was assaulted in Outremont around 7 p.m. on Friday. The assault took place on Pratt Ave. near the corner of Glendale Ave. Doré has a legal office in the same building. He was found lying on the ground and was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a serious injury to his upper body and was reported to be in stable condition, Bergeron said. Investigators have no description of the person, or people, who attacked the victim, Bergeron said, adding investigators hope to be able to talk to the victim when he recovers. Doré has been involved in many high-profile cases involving members of organized crime, including the so-called megatrials of several members of the Hells Angels almost a decade ago. In 2003, he sued a member of the biker gangs underling network for nonpayment of his services. But his practice is not limited to cases involving organized crime figures. The assault comes as Doré personally has a case before the Supreme Court of Canada. He is trying to overturn a lower court decision that upheld a 21-day suspension by the disciplinary committee of the Quebec Bar for a stinging letter Doré penned criticizing a judges comments during a bail hearing. The letter famously caused the judge, Superior Court Justice Jean-Guy Boilard, to abort one of the megatrials in 2002. Dorés lawyers in the Supreme Court case argue his right to freedom of expression was infringed upon when he was suspended by the bar. There have been at least two other incidents involving violence directed at Montreal-area defence lawyers within the past 11 months. In December, Joseph La Leggia, a very experienced and well-respected lawyer who represents a wide variety of clients, was attacked and left badly injured in front of his home in Rivière des Prairies. He has since resumed his practice, but the case remains unsolved. Thomas Kiriazis, another lawyer who lives in Outremont, was the victim of a series of death threats and intimidation last month. Two vehicles parked in front of his home on Villeneuve Ave., near Nelson Ave., were firebombed on Oct. 21. pcherry@montrealgazette.com © Copyright (c) The Montreal Read more: http://www.montrealgazette.com/M.../story.html#ixzz1ctDLc4pz Poster Comment: If violence is the norm for politicians in settling disputes as in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya....
