Title: Israel's Netanyahu a liar: Sarkozy

French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "liar" in remarks to US President Barack Obama overheard by journalists.

"I can't stand him any more, he's a liar," Mr Sarkozy said in French.

"You may be sick of him, but me, I have to deal with him every day," Mr Obama replied.

The exchange at the G20 summit was quoted by a French website, Arret sur Images, and confirmed by other media.

The remarks - during a private conversation - were overheard by a few journalists last week but were not initially reported, the BBC's Christian Fraser in Paris says.

Journalists at the bilateral press conference had been handed translation boxes but had been told not to plug in their headphones until the backroom conversation had finished. But those who did heard the revealing comments.

For several days there was media silence in France about the exchange - a decision had been taken not to embarrass the French president, our correspondent says.

A correspondent for Le Monde newspaper referred to the conversation without the quotes.

But Israeli newspapers have reported it in full.

It is said Mr Obama was taking Mr Sarkozy to task for voting in favour of the Palestinian bid for full membership of the UN cultural organisation, Unesco, a bid that was approved despite American opposition.

The remarks indicate a breakdown of trust with the Israeli leader which could have wider implications for the Middle East peace process, our correspondent says.

Poster Comment:

Typical non-story by journalistic halfwits. Now if a politician was said not be be a liar then that would be news. Actually the real story is in the following: "You may be sick of him, but me, I have to deal with him every day," Mr Obama replied.

Hi Tatarewicz,

FYI - This story already posted.

Ha'aretz "Talkback" appended to its article on this topic includes this:

View > This is nothing new. The known list of leaders who can't stand him includes Sarkozy, Merkel, William Hague, Bill Clinton, and hidden beneath the handshakes and gritted teeth, Obama himself The Pragmatist

Concluding that Netanyahu is a liar is not an opinion, it is an observation. It will be interesting reading Obama's eventual memoirs.

Merkel is said to be furious with him, and she "does not believe a word [Netanyahu] says" according to Ha'retz.

I'm not surprized at this story, but I'm impressed with the widespread mainstream attention to this flap. They could have stuffed this one under the carpet and left it for the bloggers and "conspiracy" sites to toss around. Someone's sending a message.

Your opinion is right on, Tatarawicz. Why the hell is buttwheat spending so much time with the Israel prime minister when he has so many problems at home that need tending to?

That remark speaks volumes, no matter what the intention of the leaker of the incident.

I am well aware of that, X-15, and I think that most who post at 4um are. My remark was directed to buttwheat AND his handlers or, as you call them, "kosher string-pullers". The handlers/kosher string-pullers have chosen to hide behind buttwheat and he is allowing it.

Remember, buttwheat is the one to vote out of office. His handlers will NEVER appear on a ballot.

The computer made me aware of that but I wanted to give it special treatment to illustrate the outrageous and preposterous paradox wherein in a tiny parasitic, basket-case country of criminals commands the world's military superpower as is indicated by the latter's president having to be in touch with it daily, although I still think the president was expressing an of-the-top-of-head hyperbole. There's no way the president can give America the needed leadership in domestic and international affairs if he's distracted daily by some snit that Netanyaho comes up with. Secondly, to emphasize that the reason Obama is obliged to this "daily" pandering is because Organized Jewry has schemed so effectively to make America's politicians (and others of the West) so dependent on their arranging the money, manpower and media for successful election campaigns. It's not enough to say he's a puppet unless you explain how so.
