seattlepi.com, Joshua Trujillo - A woman who gave her name as Jennifer and said she was two months pregnant is rushed to an ambulance after being hit with pepper spray at an Occupy Seattle protest on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011 at Westlake Park in Seattle. Protesters gathered in the intersection of 5th Avenue and Pine Street after marching from their camp at Seattle Central Community College in support of Occupy Wall Street. Many refused to move from the intersection after being ordered by police. Police then began spraying pepper spray into the gathered crowd hitting dozens of people. SEATTLE (AP) — A downtown march and rally in support of the Occupy Wall Street movement turned briefly chaotic as police scattered a crowd of rowdy protesters — including a pregnant 19-year-old and an 84-year-old activist — with blasts of pepper spray.

Protest organizers denounced the use of force, saying that police indiscriminately sprayed the chemical irritant at peaceful protesters. The Occupy Seattle movement released a written statement late Tuesday expressing support for "a 4-foot 10-inch, 84-year-old woman, a priest and a pregnant woman who as of this writing is still in the hospital."

Dorli Rainey is an activist who has supported liberal causes in the Seattle area for decades. A photo showing Rainey being cared for by fellow activists in the immediate aftermath of the police incident appeared on news websites around the world.

Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel said he didn't have specifics on the Rainey incident, but he said pepper spray is "is not age specific. No more dangerous to someone who is 10 or someone who is 80." He added, that if it were harmful, "we probably wouldn't be using pepper spray if that was the case."

Kappel said police had not yet established whether a pregnant woman was involved.

Paramedics examined a handful of people, including a 19-year-old woman who was three-months pregnant, Seattle fire department spokesman Kyle Moore said. The Seattle Times reported on its website that the woman was taken by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center.

Her identity and status were not immediately available. Moore added that the protester's own medical response team had taken care of others.

"These protesters are well organized, they're using homemade remedies to counter pepper spray," he said.

Seattle police said plenty of verbal warnings were given to demonstrators attempting to block intersections and streets during rush hour. "Pepper spray was deployed only against subjects who were either refusing a lawful order to disperse or engaging in assaultive behavior toward officers," Kappel wrote on the department's blog.

Kappel also noted that one man threw an "unknown liquid" at an officer's face and was arrested. The officer was not injured.

In another incident, Kappel said a 17-year-old woman swung a stick at an officer, and as police moved to arrest her, others tried to intervene on her behalf, prompting a blast of pepper spray.

Authorities arrested at least six people before quickly restoring order. Occupy Seattle organizers said the downtown march was in solidarity with other Occupy Wall Street protests around the nation.

The skirmish Tuesday was the first clash in weeks.

Occupy Seattle moved its encampment to Seattle Central Community College late October. Before that, the group had been camping at Westlake Park, leading to tense standoffs with police and dozens of arrests. (2 images)

As the economy worsens and the gap between the 1%-ers and the rest widens, don't expect the momentum to wane anytime soon.

This is looking more like something that can only get worse and will eventually start resulting in more serious injuries and then deaths. The difference between the mid-east protests and OWS will become increasingly blurred.

i've been out of the loop. this is the first ive heard of this, but the pregnant woman miscarried right after the pigs kicked and hit her in the stomach. i just posted the story. The pictures in this post above are horrifying! 84 year old woman, and pregnant woman. These cops are way too much.

my last post was meant to refer to these 2 photos above, not the other thread. the pregnant teen whose baby was murdered when cops kicked her, & the 84 yr old woman. These pictures are straight from a horror movie, or from the depths of hell!! Yikes.

have you seen these 2 photos in the above article!? WOW. The womans baby died, & that 84 year old lady I bet is likely dead, or soon so, as a result of what they did to her. Just incredible.

IMO they need to forget protests like this and instead prepare for war. A shooting war.

Protests don't do any good. At least not that I can see.

The only alternative is to add marksmen to provide security to the protesters. Then if the pigs want to escalate, they will end up dead. This one-way use of force has to stop, and the only way to stop it is to use greater force.

Somebody ought to tell the truth about the Bible. The preachers dare not, because they would be driven from their pulpits. Professors in colleges dare not, because they would lose their salaries. Politicians dare not. They would be defeated. Editors dare not. They would lose subscribers. Merchants dare not, because they might lose customers. Men of fashion dare not, fearing that they would lose caste. Even clerks dare not, because they might be discharged. And so I thought I would do it myself... Robert Ingersoll

These cops are way too much.

They need an attitude adjustment, like the Hank Williams, Jr. song suggests. ;)

i doubt that protesters will hire marksmen for protection, so theyd better come up with an alternative or they will continue getting stomped on.

Instead of risking a skull crushing, the protesters should read up on guerrilla warfare, and perhaps read books by George Hayduke for some inspiration.

If everyone just devoted 15 minutes a day to this, to each persons individual and deserving targets, we'd make their lives a living "hell". They would wish they had never been born.

No risking tear gas, battery, and general jackbooted thuggery. It's done from the safety of ones home.

That is a better alternative.

George Hayduke

Never heard of him, but sounds interesting. Smart is definitely the way to go., & 15 minutes per day should be doable for anyone.

Not sure. But, if they did not get badge numbers or names it will be tough to get them.

That wopuld be the way to go. Just remember, they still have those FEMA camps waiting for the unruly crowds. I'll never let them get me, though.

Pigs bleed too.

I'd personally like to see this rage being more tightly focused. Let it go from hot rage (protests that never have an impact) to cold and calculating rage (war). We can fuck them up, but we need effective techniques.

The problem is, imo, people demand that they be heard. That is what they care about. What they dont seem to care about is how best to get results, and the strength of being anonymous, and not being worried about being seen as a big shot VIP in the resistance movement, or on a internet forum. People need to quit caring about getting others to listen (read: agreeing) to them, and act.

We know who the enemies are. But imo we're not ready for an offensive yet. Because of that, blood will be shed, imo. We could have done it peacefully.

They sure do.

We do know who the enemy is. And you are right, we can't move too soon or we will be deep doo-doo. ;)

People need to stop by playing within the enemies rules. Rules that we obey, but they don't bother to obey these same rules that they force on us. I don't know what it will take to get citizens to do that.

I find this to be an interesting but frustrating topic.

If this topic was discussed with the same gusto that others use to discuss Ron Paul and other useless politicians, who BTW will never do anything for us except to preach useless words to the choir, making people so very happy that a mighty politician echoes their own words back to them, then we'd have won by now. We'd have won by refining thru discussion various techniques and then USING them to fight them with.
