Title: I wonder how the "Lefties" will like it when they find out that we on the TRUE Right are enjoying Fitzmas week as much as they are

I looked at much of the Fitzmas material coming out and found it to mainly come from the Left side of our artificial political spectrum. In fact I read that the term even came from DemocraticUnderground.

I wonder how these lefties are going to like it when they find out that certain people on the RIGHT (Constitutionalists, Paleo-Cons and Libertarians) are enjoying Fitzmas week as much as they are. (I'm bringing this up because it is doctrine amongst 'bot types on the Left that every one on the Right must love Shrub and his imperial administration and this is simply not so.)

We real liberals know that real conservatives like Fitzmas and DeLay extermination as much as we do. I doubt you heard a single word from DU or any other lefty source defending Traficant. A lot of us on both sides want to get back to arguing marginal tax rates and stuff, not discussing world domination. The crazies have taken over your party, calling themselves conservatives, when they make Clinton look like a crazed right winger.

I'm a social liberal and a fiscal moderate and a deficit hawk. I don't think you can impose democracy on others. I distrust almost all foreign wars (WWII and Afghanistan were exceptions, with Kosovo questionable but run well enough I could support it to end ethnic slaughter) and want Bush's national credit card taken away.

OTOH, I don't object to paying taxes, want a very strong safety net for those who can't compete in our increasingly bizarre economy, and think we have to find some sane immigration policy that allows these desperate people to enter the country and earn enough money to go home and start their own business.

At risk of boring everyone to tears, I did a story one time about a chain called Fiesta Mart, a Texas grocery chain aimed at Latinos. So I arrived to interview the CEO, and was pretty shocked to find a middle-aged white guy, named Nixon no less, and a former CIA station chief in South America. His main success had been to turn the Andes into a limited capitalist economy, so that staples like rice and fruit could reach the isolated communities, and in turn, market their products, which were mainly potatoes and crafts.

The result was an immediate improvement in nutrition, birth rate, and today those potatoes are prized gourmet products and earn farmers who were starving a decent living.

Among people that have the best interests of the world at heart, there can be many disagreements. My opinion of CIA involvement in South America had been pretty much completely negative, but this was a decent guy who did good things. He turned the company into an ESOP and today he is long retired, but the employees own the company he started and share in the profits.

That's a pretty good example of sound economic policy and compassion working together. We're getting neither from these fruitcakes.

Amen, Mekons4. I'm probably a lot more conservative than you are, but you don't sound doctrinaire and like an idealogue - and I certainly am not one either. I think folks like us can disagree, but we can find plenty of common ground to meet on. However, the neocons are crazy idealogues and extremists and the sooner they go, the better. They don't have either the best interests of this country,or the world, in mind.

I was just at a wedding where my niece is marrying a kid in the Air Force who just did two years in Iraq. I was the well-known peace freak, and his friends, all in the forces, came up to me and said, I heard about you. I said, oh? They said, put her there, pal, you were right. We all did time there, and it is a hellhole. We were told all you guys were just bitter Democrats, but we have been there, and this war is not winnable. My new nephew-in-law hurt his back over there, and they offered him some transfer, and he took it. The fine print said, he has to do two extra years, so he is now stuck in Alaska for four years. If he's lucky. His buddies, all Air Force and Army, are incredibly pissed at how they are being treated.

Anyway, I am pretty conservative as far as not giving the government a credit card. The instant you give a bureaucrat a blank check, they will spend it. That is a given. If they have to buy enough copy paper to last til 3018, they will SPEND that money. We're wasting money hand over fist everywhere in the government. I remember Newtie saying, let's buy every poor kid a laptop. Um, where do they plug it in? Who shows them how to use it? Where do they get internet service? How many get shot to take the computer and sell it?

I want my tax money spent on things that improve our society. If poor kids get a better chance at success, they are less likely to deal crack or steal a car. But handing a 10 year old with a crackhead mother a laptop means that laptop will end up, at best, in the pawnshop.

What I do know is that under Clinton and the saner Republicans, our national debt clock turned backwards for the first time in 1997 or so. Now it is racing full-speed ahead. What the hell is going on in this country? I thought the GOP was there to keep the nutty liberals from spending $22 billion on saving the deer or some crap like that. These assholes are amping up the spending while handing tax cuts to anyone who asks. They're going to eliminate the middle class, which is where ALL growth, enterpreneurship, and decency comes from. We have pathological rich and poor, and pretty soon we will belong to one or the other. For most of us, it is the latter.

I actually saw some idiot on CNN say that if we don't stop suicide bombers overseas, they will be here next week. Um, how does that figure? They went through my daughter's bag like hounds on our trip to CT this weekend. They put it through a bomb sensor. Now, some freak MIGHT get through, but there might be a volcano under my house at this moment ready to blow. We live in an uncertain world, and always have. For the Bushies to turn everything into "we're going to protect you" is such brazen bullshit...I can think of five ways right now to launch a terrorist attack if I wanted to that they have never thought of. Terrorism is just another thing we have to worry about, like drunk drivers, that you really can only hope to control, not eliminate. If you wanted to take out some person who really pissed you off, and they knew you were after them, and you were willing to die to get them, do they stand a CHANCE?

Terrorism is a tactic, you can't make war on it. You have to figure out who is backing it and cut them off at their knees. We know who is doing this. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are growing them. But the Bushies are in so tight with both of them, they will never do a goddam thing.

Anyway, thanks. I think eventually we will create a group who cares about our country and will drive these creeps out, and then get back to the reason we have two parties, to keep each other in check and eventually do what the vast majority of our people want. This pro-life and homo stuff is just masking far worse stuff. I am pro-choice, but personally, I could never support an abortion. But they would call me a baby-killer because I won't make that decision for someone who is in horrible circumstances.

I think we can fix this country by just turning the neocons into a separate political party, and watch them get 2 percent of the vote.

The trouble is that the people who really care about the country (Constitutionalists, Libertarians, Independent leftists in the Palph Nader mode) ACTUALLY constitute only two percent of the vote. All of the rest of it is being hogged by NeoCons and "Progressives" (the current name for "Liberals").
