Many believe being underweight or very thin may be all good but researchers at the University of Virginia suggest that when it comes to an operation the result may be different. According to the study published in the journal Archives of Surgery, 3,245 of the 190,000 people who underwent surgery in 2005 or 2006 died within the month after the operation. Findings showed that patients with low body mass index were at a significantly higher risk of 30-day mortality following a surgery, said senior researcher George Stukenborg of the University of Virginia. Body mass index (BMI) is a calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate how much body fat a person has. A BMI below 18.5 is considered as underweight and 18.5 and 24.9 as normal while a measurement between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight and 30 and above is obese. According to the results, the death rate among patients with a BMI of lower than 23.1 was 2.8 percent while the rate was less than one percent among those with a BMI of 35.3. Patients with a BMI of less than 23.1 had a 40 percent higher risk of death than people with mid-range BMIs of 26.3 to 29.6, researchers found. Low body mass index should be recognized as an important risk factor for 30-day mortality and should be taken into account in preoperative decision-making, discharge planning and patient education, Stukenborg suggested. Unfortunately, our research does not shed any light on why BMI is a risk factor for mortality, he added. This is an interesting question, though, and something we should think more about.
