There's a cynical old saying that "no good deed goes unpunished." That adage has proved true for an elderly Illinois man who accidentally gave away his entire life savings when making a clothing donation to his local Goodwill.

The 80-year-old man, who didn't trust banks, had kept his life savings of $13,000 sewn inside the lining of one of his suits. He is currently appealing for the money's return so that he can care for his wife, who has Stage 4 cancer.

Goodwill spokeswoman Dana Engelbert said the charity has searched the Moline store where the man made his donation but could not find the suit in question. "We're sorting through the donations that came in at the time," Engelbert explained. Goodwill employees are also searching through bins of donated clothes transported from the Moline facility to a regional warehouse in Iowa City.

"We're hoping it's still there and we can find it for them," Engelbert said, "It's their life savings. It's important."

The man's daughter, who says he is remaining anonymous because he is "devastated and embarrassed" by the story, is offering a $1,000 reward for the suit's new owner to return the cash.

You never know. Wife may have been a goofy nag, after the old geezer to clean out the clothes closet.

13 grand is not much life savings and won't make much of a dent in the cost of cancer treatments for his wife. Hopefully someone with money to spare will the help the man out, I doubt that he will get his money back.

God is always good!

The 80-year-old man, who didn't trust banks...

SEE? SEE? This is what happens to "KooKs" who don't trust the nice jooish banksters to "protect" their money for them and keep it "safe." Doesn't sewing the money into the suit make it a little tough to get the money out when you need it? Is the guy a retired tailor?

Bet'cha shekels for bagels that this story is a hoax to try and frighten the sheepsters into putting their money back into the banks. There's been a quiet bank run going on of people who no longer trust the banksters or the government to be in possession of their money.

Half the people I know keep only enough money in a checking account to pay monthly bills. The other half no longer have any money. It'd be pretty stupid to keep money parked in an account paying only 0.02% interest where the government can take it away with one keystroke. It's just not worth the risk.

If you must have money in a bank, best to use a local credit union, but be prepared to lose it at any time when the banks fail and close.

Mike Flaherty: Yeah, it's been there a long time. I wish I knew which corner.

be prepared to lose it at any time when the banks fail and close.

Some 80+ banks have closed this year and no one has lost their deposits which are guaranteed by taxpayers up to $250,000; $100,000 in Canada. If any money is lost Ben can always print more and nobody seems to notice.
