A new congressional research in the United States has revealed that almost half of all US troops' fatalities in the Afghan war have occurred during President Barack Obama's tenure.
According to a report published by the Congressional Research Service in mid-November, nearly half of all American troops killed in Afghanistan were killed between 2010 and 2011. In addition, two-thirds of all US troops injured in the Afghan war were wounded during the same period.
The report indicated that since the Afghan war started a decade ago under former US President George W. Bush, 1,723 American soldiers have died, and 14,837 others have been injured, http://Antiwar.com reported.
Out of the total number of US troop casualties, 890 were killed and 10,060 wounded over the past two years, after Obama decided to surge troops and mount the US operations in Afghanistan, the report added.
In December 2009, Obama announced plans to dispatch 30,000 more US troops to Afghanistan in early 2010, raising the number of American forces in the war-ravaged country by some 40 percent.
According to the congressional account, roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices are by far the most lethal weapons of choice used against the US-led foreign troops in Afghanistan.
The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states.
The US-led invasion of Afghanistan waged in 2001 under the pretext of 'war on terror' and with the declared aim of toppling the Taliban regime and establishing security in the war-torn country.
However, insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of nearly 150,000 US-led forces in the country.
