A Seattle woman who is receiving welfare assistance from Washington state also happens to live in a waterfront house on Lake Washington worth more than a million dollars.

Federal agents raided the home this weekend but have not released the woman or her husband's name because they have not officially been charged with a crime.

However, federal documents obtained by KING 5 News show the couple currently receives more than $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers, plus state and government disability checks and food stamps. They have been receiving the benefits since 2003.

The 2,500 square-foot home, which includes gardens and a boat dock, is valued at $1.2 million. And even though the couple has been receiving the benefits for nearly 10 years, records show that they accurately listed the address of their current home when applying for the state and federal benefits.

A federal official told KING 5 that the couple likely took advantage of a loophole, which allows low-income individuals to receive financial assistance to help them pay their rent and move away from housing projects. However, the law does not require officials to verify what type of home the benefits recipient is living in.

As if the million dollar home weren't enough, the supposedly low-income couple also gave money to various charities and traveled around the world to locales in Turkey, Tel Aviv and resort towns in Mexico, according to court records.

So, the people were in compliance with the law and the FEDS are angry about a law that they wrote.

Got it.

Suddenly it's a loophole because recipients aren't forced to sell their homes? Where will the cutoff for eligibility be? $150,000? $350,000? How humble of a shack must recipients live in to receive aid?

And is the article suggesting that recipients should never tithe with govt munny or take pity on even less fortunate people?

This will be a can of worms that the FEDs will regret opening.

Why can't we establish camps for people who want welfare? If they want money from the government they should have to work for it and not just sit back and collect while the rest of us go to work every day.

Volsung • Austin,

Steady on there, Pilgrim.

Camps are a bad idea in any context. Camps may not be un-American in view of our history, but they certainly are in respect to what many of us hold to be liberty loving.

Something about this stinks. I don't see how you can be low income and afford the taxes, utilities & maintennance on a house supposedly worth $1.2 million, let alone world travel and charity.

That trip to Tel Aviv might be a clue, but I can't figure that out.

Somebody involved in this deal needs to be clipped. Maybe everybody.

Not so with the Sec8 Housing Choice Voucher program.

Those units are inspected prior to tenant move-in, and yearly thereafter.

You're right! I did miss an important clue that didn't register during my initial reading. Photobucket
