Stephen Trimble from Flight Global reports Russia delivered the Avtobaza ground-based electronic intelligence and jamming system to Iran six-weeks ago. While most weapons deliveries to Iran are blocked, a jamming system like the Avtobaza is allowed because it's a passively defensive machine "designed to jam side-looking and fire control radars on aircraft and manipulate the guidance and control systems of incoming enemy missiles." Possibly what NATO regulators didn't plan on was the jammer's potential as a communications link allowing UAVs to be controlled remotely. Whether that's how it was used Sunday is another matter. Jack Burton on Dec 5, 5:07 PM said: US military is admitting the drone loss. Though they say it went off track while operating over Afghanistan and strayed into Iranian airspace where it crashed on it's own. A perfectly plausible story and most likely the truth. Iran could never cause an American weapons system to malfunction or be shot down, nor could any Russian electronics warfare system affect American drone technology in action. The drone was lost due to simple accident, as most American troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan were lost to accidents. Simply put, Americans are invulnerable to any force except accident or friendly fire. Seriously though, since it is now admitted the drone was lost and that is was this high tech stealth system, I wonder why such state of the art stealth is needed in Afghanistan operations. Taliban is well known to have no radar systems and no AA missile systems other than perhaps a few way out of date shoulder fired systems of old Soviet production. But to my knowledge we are not even sure of that fact. We do know the US would never admit if this drone was brought down due to Iranian actions and we also know Iran would be quick to claim a victory if the drone did come down either on it's own or due to electronic jamming. Bottom line in Iran is, the west has worked very hard to prevent Russian anti aircraft systems and radars from being sold to Iran. Obviously front line Russian systems are a major threat to Israel and US air assets or the Americans would not have put so much pressure on Russia to void the S-300 missile contract with Iran that Israel called a "game changer" and a "cause for preventive military action". Funny that a purely defensive weapon like S-300 could be viewed as a threat to Israel. This would only be the case if Israel attacked Iran from the air. Though first rate, the Israeli air force does not have the numbers to sustain a week or more of losses inflicted by S-300 systems. Ukraine also sold a few years back to Iran a Russian designed totally passive air defense tracking network. It tracks enemy air assets via the electronic emissions given off by attacking planes and missiles, powerful computers then process all the electronic information in real time and present a full picture off air assets operating over Iranian territory. A very useful system and very hard to knock out, being wholly passive. This is not going to be a walkover like Iraq or Afghanistan. Iran is a proper country with a functional (albeit less than democratic) government. They may be a threat to US interests in the region but can never be a threat to the US itself. Iran has as much a right to defend itself as the US so don't start crying about "them darn Russians defending those Airanians." Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
