Occupy Sacramento protester won't come down from tree

By Bill Lindelof
blindelof@sacbee.com

One Occupy Sacramento protester is standing in a tree and won't come down.

"Until they forcefully remove me," the man told a Bee photographer when asked how long he would remain in the magnolia tree in Cesar Chavez Plaza.

He apparently spent the night in his perch along J Street, untouched by Sacramento police who arrested about two dozen protesters for failure to disperse after the 11 p.m. park curfew.

Two police officers stood nearby this morning about 8:30 a.m. as the man who gave his name only as "Joe" stood on a limb about 15 feet off the ground.

If his zone of comfort in a tree is only fifteen feet and if he has no climbing equipment and training, he will come down soon enough.

Just a professional opinion, mind you.

hey I'll take your word for it. My experience with tree climbing ended about age 12.

Edit: I must admit I thought of you with this article.

I was higher up when they nailed me with pepper spray when I was in a tree at the Eugene Tree Riot which was the biggest story here in 1997. I tried to climb higher but slipped and whacked myself somewhat senseless and half dangling from my rope and harness.

The got the fire department cherry picker to me and extracted me fairly easily.

I was not arrested and taken to jail then by the way. And I was pepper sprayed again when the police moved on the crowd.

The thought of being at fifteen feet with no equipment is terrifying for me. But then again, since I was nearly killed doing a tree sit, I have a deeper sense of mortality and do things slower and use more methodology then I did.

I also am less passive. If one comes up to my aerie to try to subdue me and lower me to the ground, I would not recommend that if they value their very life.

Depends on the kind of tree. Some are full enough that it can be comfortably safe. If it's a single branch you sit on with nothing to lean into, forget it.

I used to trim trees professionally for a utility company. Was only scared once when I was probably 25 feet up this oak or something. sitting on the lowest branch on the thing. Harnesses didn't do enough to make me feel safe.
