A railgun shoots a projective at 5400 miles an hour. They are made of special metals so they don't ablate in midair.

I don't think it's possible to get away from one.

Whenever I see that our government has a new weapon like this, I wonder how to avoid getting killed by it.

Actually , the railgun is an older idea. They are also called coil guns. Many amateurs have built all kinds of coil guns. Stuff comparable to the small arms of the military. However when it comes to big arms the Navy has two rail weapons systems that surpass all. One is a giant long steel bar. As long as a trailer house. Fired from a ship it will not rock the ship but it will level a base with pure kinetic impact. The other system is similar however at a certain height before impact a warhead explodes sending many smaller bars into everything creating shrapnel and impact damage.

How do you defeat it?

Those expensive cruise missiles are on their way out. A railgun is far more destructive than any missile, except nuclear, and is far more cheaper.
