Links: 48 Elementary Schools With Lowest Enrollments | Enrollment Data For High Schools Slideshow: Famous Local Catholic School Grads Fox 29 learned on Thursday night that Delaware County's Archbishop Prendergast and its neighbor Monsignor Bonner will be on the list of Catholic private schools that the Blue Ribbon commission will recommend for closure. It will be up to the Archbishop of Philadelphia to decide which schools close, combine or remain open. The announcement at 4 p.m. will be preceded by private meetings with administrators and local leaders on Friday, so more news about the closings will probably make it online before the press conference. Earlier this week, we spoke with blogger Susan Matthews, who reports on Roman Catholic church activities. Matthews believed between 3 and 5 high schools would close, and between 30 and 40 elementary schools would be shuttered, after the church considered the commissions recommendations. The cuts will be historic for an Archdiocese that is battling dwindling enrollments at schools and an ongoing child sex-abuse scandal. The Archdiocese has 178 schools serving about 68,000 students, which represents a 35 percent drop in enrollment since 2001. About 30 schools have closed in the past five years. That number of closures could double on Friday if church leaders agree with the commissions recommendations, and it would mark a 20 percent cut in the current number of schools. In recent years, Northeast Catholic and Cardinal Dougherty High Schools were closed by the Archdiocese. This time, West Catholic has been the subject of closure rumors. Matthews also expected many low-enrollment elementary schools to be on the closings list. The vast majority of low-enrollment schools are in the suburbs, according to an analysis by MyFoxPhilly.com. The Archdiocese will also discuss its plans for expanding curriculum options at the consolidated schools. A decision from church leaders could come quickly, as the schools are expected to close this summer. The list of closures will only be a recommendation. The archbishop will have the final say.
