Ron Paul Narrows Deficit With Romney In New Hampshire

1/08/2012 @ 10:35AM

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is still far and away the choice of New Hampshire voters when they go to the polls to pick President Barack Obama’s adversary on Tuesday, but only one candidate is gaining on him. A Suffolk University/7 News poll published on Saturday had Romney at 35%, down from 40% two days before. Ron Paul, a Texas Congressman, rose to 20% from 17. Undecided voters account for around 15%.

John Huntsman moved to third place with 11% of the intended vote. All other candidates are in the single digits with Rick Perry in dead last and likely to announce his departure from the race unless his luck turns in South Carolina mid-month.

Undecided voters will likely pick from whom they see as being the better performer at the back-to-back debates in Manchester Saturday and Sunday morning. Romney was often targeted by other Republican opponents during the debates. However, on the sidelines of Saturday evening’s debate at St. Anselm College, Ron Paul and garnered most of the attention from the press who were waiting to talk with advisors and supporters in a gym outside of the Carr Center where the debate was held.

Former Minnesota Republican governor Tim Pawlenty was on hand to show his support for former Massachusetts governor Romney. “I think tonight’s debate helped Romney’s chances. He showed that he is a great communicator and a great debater who can take on Obama one on one in real campaign. But I wouldn’t say that his lead in New Hampshire is a momentum push to win the southern primary states next week,” he said. South Carolina is the next big primary of this election season.

Senator Rand Paul, Ron Paul’s son, said that his father could conceivably beat Romney with help from the independent vote. “It is going to be very hard for anyone to beat Mitt Romney,” he admitted. “We think that one of the best ways to win an election is to win the independent vote and he can win that.”

Over the last two days, Romney’s challengers have been going after him for his leadership at Bain Capital, a private equity firm. Gingrich has gone after him for laying off thousands while at Bain, to which Romney responded that the U.S. was a free economy and that some businesses succeed and others fail, leading to the lay offs at some of Bain’s investments.
