William Walkman has spent years living with harp seals, protecting them from both animal and human predators.

Photobucket

(Labrador, Canada) Harp seal activist William Walkman has long been admired for his devotion to the cause of saving baby harp seals from their annual slaughter. For years, Walkman has lived among the seals, befriending them, and caring for the babies while the parents went off in search of food.

Walkman's story is made even more compelling through the video he has shot of himself interacting with the seals. On one day he is seen beating off a killer whale with a pole as it attempts to catch seals, a staple of the killer whale diet. The next day he is seen trying to feed fish to the baby seals, as adult seals nervously circle him, barking and pounding their tails on the ice in their attempts to protect their babies.

The camera captures a man obsessed with a mission, yet his motivation seems to be a blurred mixture of altruism and selfishness. His mood varies between elation and despair, and his rants against humanity for its uncaring use of baby seal pelts for fur seem, at times, strangely self-serving.

The video that Walkman has gathered of the seals presents an unnerving juxtaposition of the baby seals' cuteness with a life that is filled with danger on a daily basis. Sharks, polar bears, and killer whales are always on the hunt for the seals, and Walkman is often seen placing himself in between the hunter and the hunted. He is a self-appointed guardian, risking his life as he interrupts the natural course of nature.

The recent discovery of Walkman's body by some fishermen, beaten to death in his sleep, was met with widespread suspicion that seal hunters had taken matters into their own hands. But an investigation by Labrador provincial police has now revealed that blood samples taken from the tails of several adult seals match Walkman's blood.

The tragic death of Walkman is now believed to be the result of an attack by the adult seals, probably in the middle of the night while Walkman was trapped in his sleeping bag. The adult seals instinctive protectiveness over their pups was a force that Mr. Walkman could not overcome. Despite his near-fanatical care for their welfare, the seals role in the natural order of things was not to be interrupted.

Life for the seals will now go on as it had before, a life filled with danger, whether from sharks, killer whales, and polar bears, or from the men who arrive each year to club the young seals for their fur.

History will have to judge whether William Walkman was a champion of animal rights, or a lost soul who was just trying to restore some meaning in his lonely, tortured life… or, just maybe, some of both.

Poster Comment:

Once again a man who was compelled to interact with wild animals made a fatal mistake-he assumed that Harp Seals craved human affection. This anthropomorphism or, attributing human emotions and virtues to wild animals also cost a bear lover and his companion their lives.

The bear man tried to live among the coastal Brownies, (or grizzly bears) and presumably he made the mistake of believing that the bears would sense his disdain for other humans who hunt the bears and consider him a friend, just as it would happen in a Walt Disney film.

Well, the wild bears eventually did the same thing to him that they do to all critters that are weak, sick and mentally unfit for survival among their own-they ate him and his sleeping bag squeeze, too.

Of course in the killing of BABY SEAL MAN by adult Harp Seals, those who bludgeoned him to death with their tails didn't have to be destroyed. But, the bears who had tasted human blood weren't so lucky.

I was thinking of disney too.

I think some people are too stupid to live. He was one of those people. Caring, without being tempered by intelligence and reason, is fatal. And it seems that they never see it coming.

Well said.

I hate to seem like a "social Darwinist", as my leftist co-worker termed uncaring individuals who didn't bleed for the plight of animals and muds of every stripe.

But, some people attempt to defy the laws of nature as they embrace the mushy, romantic notions that play well when trying to bang scatter brained college chix. But such things don't work in the field with un-bullshittable critters.

There should be a rule when such folks go afield. "If the critters you encounter don't talk to you in voices of ancient sages then the animals aren't Disney's and should be left alone."

Kinda like this:

Ah, yes, the demand for conformity during Rockefeller's "police action".

When my brother was on patrol in Nam (2 tours) he was issued woven synthetic sandbags each night to fill and bag around his foxhole to sleep. But, instead of emptying and folding the bags and carrying them in his pack that day he was instructed to slice them with his bayonet and bury them each morning so he could be issued new bags that evening.

Where war profits are at issue frugality is frowned upon.

And then there was MAD MOMENT at the end of each month. This was the firing of all remaining ammo into the jungle or the air in order to replace it with "fresh stuff." (military ammo lots from WWII and Korea are still sold and it fires reliably. This is part of ammo milspec-long term storage and moisture resistance)

(Another chap, an air force crewman in the 1960's told me that when he returned to Thule Air Base in Greenland his plane had to "fly around the flagpole" and burn up any remaining fuel in order to justify the next period's allotment)

That should settle any argument about the real purpose of police action II as well as over 400 military installations in over 150 countries..

War profiteers are an unseen nobility in America. Even Lincoln bought the same batch of faulty rifled muskets twice, but he didn't dare expose the crooks for fear of losing more of his already meager support in Congress. "What's the connection between ill gotten war profits and happy congressmen", one may ponder?

According to the supreme court "big piles of cash with an agenda" are people too, and they have the same right to participate in elections as you and I. Hence the absence of any political will to end waste in the military.

It's been a tough decade for naturist types.

Steve Irwin, spiked by a stingray. Timothy Treadwell, the Grizzly Man, mauled and eaten by...yep, grizzlies.

Even Jim Fowler barely survived Marlin Perkins' many attempts to kill him off.

Now I can understand the seals wanting to bash Walkman but beating him to death in his sleep takes planning and malice aforethought. Are they really capable of planning homocide?

Yep, I'd be suspecting some seal hunters got sick of the guy, beat him to death, then took some of his blood and smeared it onto a few seals.

It sounds like something they'd do.

Quite plausible.

People who budget their entire year's survival on harvests of pelts can be quite touchy when a dew guuder interferes.

James Michener's CHESAPEAKE tells of the sometimes fatal shooting wars between watermen on the bay in the past, and I assume that today those who take pelts in The Maritimes are equally prone to violence when their survival is at stake.

People who are bipolar have no filters.

While this certainly vibrates as truth, I'm not convinced that individuals so dedicated to animals that they attempt to "lawyer them up" can be neatly covered with a blanket diagnosis.

It reminds me of a young man I knew who wanted to be a cop in CA. He told me that if he arrested a rapist that he wasn't sure that he'd be able to control himself. When asked to elaborate he said that he'd probably bludgeon the suspect, and when I asked if he intended to tell a police hiring board that he said yes!

The poor guy didn't realize that he had a serious ego problem and that his stated wish to be a knight in shining armor wielding a bloody flashlight would have automatically precluded him from employment in a cop gig.

I'm betting that if animal activists were peer reviewed and licensed before going afield and being eaten by critters they aggravate with their presence and smells that they too would be precluded from making these tragic headlines for the same reason. It's the same sick, fairie tale ego problem, a "reverse Cinderella syndrome" if you will where activists lovingly retrieve animal turds instead of glass slippers, hoping to tenderly stroke a different sort of "pelt".

Christine and her hubby are very savvy when it comes to the human condition, and she has recognized obscure conditions in people we both know of. I'd like to get her cut on this issue, the clanging gears in the minds of martyred animal activists.
