In this week's Local List we run through our favourite German novelists. It was no mean feat to pick just 10 in a country which has produced arguably some of the world's most influential literature. Even though this list stretches from war narratives to sexual awakenings, the Romantic Movement to post-modernism, it can only scratch the surface of the wealth of authors Germany has to offer.

We even decided to leave out the man generally regarded as Germany's greatest writer - Goethe - because his best-known works were plays and poems. So click through the gallery and check out our choices - from Günter Grass to Cornelia Funke, there should be something to suit even the fussiest of readers. If your favourite is not here, feel free to add to the list below.

Günter Grass

Nobel Literature Prize winner Grass has been a big player on the literary scene since his magical realism masterpiece, The Tin Drum, was published in 1959 (the photo above is Grass’ illustration of Oskar, the lead character). His books explore post-war German guilt, a topic made all the more poignant by the author’s admission that he was a member of the Waffen SS during World War II.

Hermann Hesse

Hesse is one of the top selling German authors of all time, and with meaty tomes such as Damien, Steppenwolf and Death and the Lover to his name, this is no surprise. Hesse, born in 1877 in Calw, Baden-Wurttemberg, had a rocky personal life dominated by unhappy marriages and war before he eventually settled in Switzerland and died alone in 1962.

Patrick Süskind

While Süskind was respected as a playwright Germany, it was his fatally sexy tale Perfume: The Story of a Murderer that brought the 62-year-old author fame as a novelist. The post-modern tale of a young perfume-making killer who collects the scent of his female victims has sold more than six million copies worldwide. Famously, however, Süskind will not accept awards for his writing.
