He was one of those rare musicians who transcended his instrument and it became an extension of his soul. They are a very rare breed and all we can do is look at them and go OMG, OMG. Hendrix, The Count, Rubenstein, Laurindo Almeida, and its hard for to come up with many more. I can think of a few singers - Mario Lanza, Janis Joplin, Billie Holladay, Johnny Cash, and still they are rare treasures a step above we mere mortals. I still tear up when I recall Johnny Cash's 4th of July with the Boston Pops.
