Really great music, my friend. Thank you. Rodney Crowell is a fave of mine. He was the jewel in Emmy Lou's touring band and his own stuff like Earthbound and I Walk The Line (revisited) really knock me out. And The Steeldrivers are just out of this world. Tammy Rogers is in demand as a session player, sawing on her fiddle in her distinctive style. I swear, if I ever decided to do something other than play guitar (I'm either playing, getting ready to or just finished playing) I'd wanna be a string bass player in a bluegrass/country band. That sound just lights me up just like mah daddy before me!

Iron Butterfly at the old Va Beach Coliseum (which has been demolished) was the only show I ever walked out of. My long haired, teen aged drummer-brother and me both agreed that Pinera & Rhino were killing us with their trebly, screaming dual leads from their Marshal stacks. The place wasn't big enough or they played too loud, depending on who you'd choose to fault. We knew at that time that Clapton had gone deaf for a while from touring with Cream, and Clapton times two was 2 much! My ears rang for hours after leaving that damned show. He was one of those rare musicians who transcended his instrument and it became an extension of his soul. They are a very rare breed and all we can do is look at them and go OMG, OMG. Hendrix, The Count, Rubenstein, Laurindo Almeida, and its hard for to come up with many more. I can think of a few singers - Mario Lanza, Janis Joplin, Billie Holladay, Johnny Cash, and still they are rare treasures a step above we mere mortals. I still tear up when I recall Johnny Cash's 4th of July with the Boston Pops. He tore it up!! Great rendition of a classic!!!

This song reminds me of one of my best friends from my misspent "ute" and young "adultery" (adulthood). He was/is an electrician and every time he would see a really fine-looking girl he would say, "I wouldn't mind helping her rough one in." They were using several 100 watt Marshals each in a room that was perhaps 1/20th the size of the large venues of today. And both Pinera & Rhino had brittle, ear piercing settings that were just awful. There was no such thing as the CA-Eddie Van Halen "brown sound" back then. I also saw Johnny Winter there with Humble Pie (when Frampton was with them) and Humble Pie used Marshals that were better adjusted for the venue, while Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer used 6 Fender Twin Reverbs each and they couldn't be heard (with any definition of individual notes) in the back at all. That could be why they eventually demolished the old convention center. It was too small for the big shows and too big for the acts equipped for blues venues. If you check out the gigs for Coco Montoya (blues man extraordinaire) you'll see that he plays medium sized clubs on his tours despite his popularity in the blues niche market. Blues artists just don't sell out 20,000 seat venues. And Johnny Winter with Rick derringer in the co-pilot seat was considered a blues act in Va Beach. (and a gay icon along with his brother Edgar in NYC, I later learned) LOL! Reckon their amps were too good for the venue they were playing?

It sounds like they were set up to play somewhere like Red Rocks (in Colorado) or some other big outdoor venue like Woodstock. I don't know why anyone thinks it is necessary to just blast people to death in a little auditorium/convention center. Their music is good played loud but then there is loud and then there is LOUD and too damned loud--I reckon you know what I mean.

I'm still fond of the head banging metal of the Schenker brothers either together (scorpions) or Michael alone with either UFO or MSG. Michael can sure bend a string on his trademark flying vee Todd Snider is the closest I ever come to Country music but I also like to kick back to some Scandinavian folk music, some of which I still remember from my youth. in my teens my grandmother on my dad's side would get upset when she would talk to me in Norse and I'd answer in English even though I knew what she was saying out of lack of practice I'd forgotten how to speak the language. My two oldest are the same way with Tagalog (Bicol) which is my wife's native tongue but job requirements when I was living in the Philippines had me speaking multiple dialects as weird things can happen if one uses the wrong one, lot of same word different meaning situations.

pinoys do not like 'canos drinking in their bars and would express their dislike by throwing plates and glasses around the offending table, I would just whip out a "hoy pare bukik ganyan ka?" (hey buddy why do you have to be like that?) which would cause them to lighten up considerably. I liked the pinoy bars as the prices were less than half of those that catered to americans.
