(AP) A homeless man who was stuck in thick mud near the Rio Grande river in Albuquerque for three days was rescued Saturday after some high school students on a field trip heard him yelling for help, authorities said. However, the man's newfound freedom wasn't going to last. Police said he was wanted on a felony warrant, and they planned to arrest him after he was treated at a local hospital. A group of La Cueva High School students and their biology teacher heard the man yelling Saturday morning from a marshy wetlands area in the Oxbow Open Space Preserve, the Albuquerque Fire Department and police officials said. The students were in the area about two miles north of Interstate 40 in Albuquerque doing a school project. They called authorities and told them that the man said he'd been stuck in the river for three days and could not move, according to a police report. Fire crews and preserve officers responded and found a "male subject stuck on a reed island about a hundred yards from the west bank of the river," the report said. Crews deployed an air boat and used a pulley system to lift the man from the mud and water, and up a hill. Police later identified the man as Clayton Senn, a transient who'd been living near the river. Authorities said they discovered a warrant for Senn's arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony. Senn was taken to an Albuquerque hospital for treatment and was to be booked on the warrant upon his release, police said. Details on Senn's condition were not immediately available. Poster Comment: From among 300+ comments: lakeqi Chelsea, Michigan I've been stuck in mud before. I was really quite shocked at how there was no way to get myself out. its like a vacuum. My future wife pulled me out with a stick.Otherwise, who knows how long I would have been stuck. Pretty scary. purr when i was 10 i went on a trip with my parents in a third world country and the trip involved going on a huge wooden boat - and it was something we would never put to use in developed nations. so, we get to this, let us call it a park , yes a park, and there are no docks. so we have to get off the boat using wooden planks and when we landed, it was in knee deep mud. when you stepped in it, you started to sink in further and further and it was difficult to pull your leg bag up to take another step . . . many people departed with their shoes there and their feet returned from the mud , all bare - and they walked and walked to get to the shore - lo and behold, what do we see - not a park, not anything else, but a shoe shop. they sell you shoes right at the landing, knowing you are guaranteed to lose your shoes in that mud . . . RM Los Angeles, California If you ever start getting stuck past your knees, do not struggle any further. Lie down on your back like you're floating in water and slowly 'back-stroke' out. Mud has a higher density than water so you will 'float' even better. Unknown Galloway Twp, New Jersey I don't remember exactly where in South Jersey, but from what I read in the paper a man went duck hunting aproximately 50 years ago were missing after one hunting trip. At first the authority thought it was foul play. But since he was just disappeared and his body was never found so no one knew for sure. About 10 years ago someone found a skeleton in the mud where the missing man went. The examiner said the skeleton must haved stucked in the mud at least 30 years. So now they think that was the man that went missing. He was probably stucked in the mud couldn't move and drowned when the tide came in. Scáthach Our NM news said he had frostbite on both legs up to the knees and may lose one or both feet. Oh well, stupid is as stupid does and this guy was definitely on the stupid side. Bob Dallas, Texas Nice warm bed, hot meals, exercise time, media time, free healthcare, free education (he'll be a lawyer in 4 years), and ability to avoid incarceration in future criminal activity. Have I missed anything? And they tell us crime don't pay! Saural Bergenfield, New Jersey In Alaska getting stuck like that can be deadly. The mud up there can be glacial silt mud. The more you struggle, the deeper you go. It seems firm, but movement liquifies it. And then it hardens again. You don't go walking out onto mud flats up there. And once you are too deep, they can't get you out. Even with rescue machinery. They pulled one guy in half trying to pull him out with a helicopter! thearcher McLean, Virginia Very lucky he was in N.M,I'm from Florida, same thing happened to a guy in Cental Florida and if it wasn't for a sheriff he would have been gator bait, gator had his arm in a death roll..ended up losing it,the arm ofcourse...gator was killed. There were other gators in the periphery so he was definitely toast if not for the sheriff.Go Gator's Eric Hates Scammers Stützerbach, Germany Mud is a killer. Many people have got stuck in low tide. PoorBlackChild Students my #$%$ they were border patrol agents trying to smuggle arms into Mexico and got caught by a homeless man. Now as a part of a cover-up operation, they "discover" an outstanding warrant on the poor guy. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
