This Hannukah card from Rick Santorum's South Carolina team -- captured first by Hunter Baker -- is worth a giggle or three. But was it a huge mistake? Santorum's state staff hasn't gotten back to me yet, but the more I look at this the less sense it makes. There's a whole (frankly, more fun) testament to draw on if you're forging some temporarily solidarity with Jews. They are, after all, adherents of one of the great Abrahamic religions. Not the right one! But if you focus on Israel, and ignore the fact that you want to covert as many people as possible to what Disraeli called "completed Judaism," you're on good ground. You don't really want to get into the Gospel. Here's the part that follows the quoted bit. The Pharisees challenged him, “Here you are, appearing as your own witness; your testimony is not valid.” Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.” Right. No. Don't remind Jews of this. Meanwhile: Poster Comment: Let's all lay hands on Rick and pray for a miracle. The miracle that Ron Paul will be our next President. Hey Rick, do you think you could take some time out from trying to convert Jews to Christianity to put up a few Ron Paul yard signs?

Evidently Santorum was misled by some 'Messianics' about a card to Jewish voters. Undoubtedly rubbed some of them the wrong way, but others may have appreciated the fact that he was trying to do something nice. In the White House, Dubya sent out Hanukkah cards that had a nice Hanukkah message -- but didn't notice that the painting in the card front showed the White House covered with snow and a 19th century sleigh towing a Yule tree up to the front door!
