What's interesting about this coat of arms is that it is saying to be free you must always be ready to defend yourself -- hence the rampant lion, the sword, the shield,and the helmet.
The same imagery exist among the ancient Greeks with Athena, who shared with Ares (the stupid god of war) being the goddess of war, only the wise one. She had a sword and a shield, and on that shield was the Gorgon, who of course froze solid anyone who looked at it.
