Tehran: Iran has stopped oil exports to six European states in retaliation for European Union sanctions imposed on the Islamic state's key export, its English-language Press TV reported on Wednesday.

"Iran cuts its oil exports to six European countries," Press TV reported.

Press TV said Iran has stopped exporting oil to Netherlands, Greece, France, Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Brent crude oil prices were up $1 a barrel to $118.35 shortly after the announcement.

The EU's 27 member states have decided to stop importing crude from Iran from July 1 over its disputed nuclear program, which the West says is aimed at building bombs. Iran denies this.

Iran's oil minister said on February 4 that the Islamic state would certainly cut its oil exports to "some" European countries.

My bet is that the EU was waiting until July because that’s when their oil consumption is the lowest. It is probably highest in the winter because much of Europe still uses oil to heat their homes just like the North Eastern US does. Also, I find the countries they picked most interesting. Greece, Portugal, Spain, and Italy are all on the verge of economic collapse already. This is going to put a tremendous amount of pressure on th EU. The Netherlands gets very cold in the winter and my guess is they use the most heating oil, although that is speculation. France also likely uses a lot of heating oil in the winter and is also one of the strongest members of the EU.

Iran appears to have thought this out very carefully. Good for them. Unfortunately, this is why gas was $3.20 this morning in my neck of the woods. That won’t bother lawmakers or most of the decision makers in DC though since they are driven around on the taxpayers dime.
