It is the principle of the thing. If you allow government to tell you what you can or cannot do to yourself in one area, they will encroach into another. It is the nature of govt to expand, the nose under the tent principle.

Don't you get tired of the constant battle on so many political fronts? Of course you do. The reason, government must be constantly monitored, checked against basic principles, and guarded against their intrusion. You simply cannot allow them to tell you what you can or cannot do to yourself, or they will begin to take that "right" and stretch it to the point we are at now.

Tobacco, alcohol, salt, fatty foods, hydrogenated oil, coconut oil, pepper. All things that the govt has no business disallowing people to ingest, but they do. The only way to get them out of this intrusive mindset, is with the principle, "I OWN ME".

It is not my fault that society taxes others to pay for my bad choices. It is societies fault for intruding into that area that is my responsibility. It is my friends and relatives that can be emotionally hurt by my choices. So what?, government should not be in the business of protecting people from emotional hurt. If government uses "hurt" to family as a reason to control ME, what is the end game? Why cannot they disallow homosexuality, because it hurts family and friends? How about outlawing pre-marital sex? Pregnancy without insurance? Pregnancy outside of marriage? Too many children for government to handle? We must draw a line between govt and ourself, and the place to draw it is a principled on. I OWN ME, butt out and leave me alone.

Exactly. It is none of the government's business what I want to snort, smoke, eat, ingest, or rub in my belly button. It is none of the government's business who I associate with or what I have to say on any given issue. However, in the current climate government, with behind the scenes manipulation, it is increasingly the case that private affairs are governed by increasingly tyrannical government.

Generally and literally. I am also generally opposed to drug use even though I despise the so-called "War On Drugs" as it has been little more than an excuse to tyrannize innocent people while keeping the competition to the "in cartels" in check. It also helps with the profit margin that the CIA and the rest of the elites enjoy from the drug trade. As long as an individual is taking no action which infringes upon the liberty of another it is none of the government's damn business. Courts, Coinage, and Defense - no more, no less.

Good question. In high school I flunked typing. I had a block at 35 wpm. Now, when I'm really cookin' probably 60 to 80. Sometimes I actually get slowed down by the keyboard.

Now, when I'm really cookin' probably 60 to 80. Sometimes I actually get slowed down by the keyboard.

I use the dvorak keyboard layout. The standard Qwerty keyboard (named for the top row of keys) was allegedly made the standard layout because the original kingpin who monopolized typewriter manufacturing had this layout. The layout was supposedly chosen because his sales guys, who of course couldn't type, could give a reasonably impressive and quick demo by typing "typewriter" --- because all the letters required to type it are on the top row. In fact the layout might have been designed to slow typists down because typing too fast on those mechanical machines could cause them to jam -- something obviously not much of a concern on computer keyboards.

Mr. Dvorak invented a new layout which puts the most commonly used keys, like vowels on the left hand home keys, and the most common consonants on the right side home keys. Second most used are on the top row and least used on the bottom row. They are strategically positioned so you most often switch between left and right hand with each letter when typing which also increases speed.

Takes getting used to, but I've been using dvorak for about the last 14 years or so. The motor skills are the same so the switch is purely in your brain. Both windows and linux allow the option. I occasionally gotta do qwerty when on other computers but part of my brain remembers it. Gotta watch the keyboard then but can still type okay.

Interesting - I was aware of the explanation that the layout was chosen to slow fast typists down, but not the other.

I've thought of trying a Dvorak keyboard but maybe I'm just too much of a stick in the mud as I have not done it yet.

Mmmm...my understanding is that they chose the QWERTY because it spread out the various letters enough to reduce the inevitable tangling of the letter-striking arms in the early typewriters. If you typed very fast on a manual typewriter, the type arms would tangle.

Note the inability of LP's big government loving drug warriors to rebut his common sense comment.

That whole thread is an example of what I mean when I say that conservatives want to use the power of government to control everyone else while at the same time demanding that same government leave them alone.

If you read the comments of the drug warriors on that thread and then follow their comments on other threads, you will find them bitching and moaning about the government interfering in their lives.

As an aside, RLKK needs to just die already. He used to be a decent person until his advanced age made it impossible for him to perform his job and he was fired. Every since then he's been mad at the world and become an intolerant and authoritarian prick who hates everyone and everything and wants to get back at younger people by sending them off to war to be killed or maimed.

If you want the government to leave you alone, and most people with a bit of sense do, you have to recognize that others have the right to be left alone too. Doesn't matter if you agree with them or not so long as they are not hurting you. For those who say that the use of (some) drugs hurts people's friends and family members I ask how far would they like to extend the protection of the government towards the feelings of some folks. People make lots of choices that hurt their family and friends, most of which are not illegal. But the point is that the government needs to butt out until and unless someone harms others.

I say that as someone who doesn't use any drugs currently classified as illegal. I don't smoke pot but then I don't smoke anything and haven't in years because of my lungs (quit smoking almost 30 years ago I think). But I have no problem with people who do smoke pot or take whatever drug they want so long as they are not harming others. Of course if I knew someone, a family member or a friend, that I thought was going down the wrong path I would try my best to show them that they had made a bad choice. But assuming they are not little kids there is little you can do about it and people WILL make bad choices. We all do from time to time.

Well if that is the way you feel then by today's contemporary standards you are not a conservative. You can call yourself one but you will be shunned by the conservative movement as a whole just as the good Dr. Paul is. Today's conservative movement is about big government, the police state, and war.

Leftists have infiltrated the movement, and with the help of the MSM, have changed the meaning of conservatism. They did the exact same thing in the early 20th century when they were able to change the meaning of what it meant to be a liberal, a term that for more than 100 years was used in conjunction with the political beliefs of the founding fathers, certain enlightenment era philosophers, and 19th century philosophers like Batiste.

Politically, I would classify myself as a liberal but with the meaning it had in the days of the founders. I don't claim to be a conservative if the definition of conservative includes the neo-con sellouts who have been instrumental in destroying this country.
