I just received news that Jim was taken to the hospital several days ago for a bleeding ulcer and is not doing well. They have him on a respirator and he's not lucid. That's all I know tonight.

Years ago when I had my bout with ulcers, the docs were shocked that I was a non drinker and non smoker. They finally settled on my job as the cause as when I went back to work, once again I had problems, of course Uncle Sam said it was'nt. Finally retired and had not a problem since. Many things eat at a man besides alcohol.
There is a strong causal association showing that the helicobacter pylori bacteria causes most stomach ulcers (and yes, stress plays a role too).

James... The Australians were the ones that pinned the blame on bacteria but American medicine has never bought into such as the only cause. I went back to work for a year and a half, til the doc told me, either quit work or you wont make it. Never had a problem since. Thats been forty years.
Yes, the Aussie doctor (Barry Marshall) who discovered the association between the bacteria and ulcers actually gave himself an ulcer to prove it. That is not saying that the bacteria is the only causal factor but that it seems to be present in just about everyone who has ulcers.

Stress can definitely dump enough acid into our guts to eat holes everywhere.

I started taking kefer, which is a lot like yogurt but contains a wider variety of healthy bacteria which replenishes what should be in your own gut. For me, the result was immediate and drastic, and I've never really had bad heartburn since. If I did feel it coming on, I'd just take a glass of kefer and it went away within a few minutes. I think it helps destroy the bad bacteria, while reestablishing the natural flora in the digestive tract. Sir Lod... Via PM I will send you brief summary of one side effect of my ulcer operation and recuperation. You must not show it to the Mrs. as she would whack both of us. It is NOT intended for ladies viewing.

Yep, kefer is one of the best probiotics there is, and probably one of the most natural and easy to find. Heh, heh, heh. :-) As a fan of good food I can sympathize. Hospital food is even worse than a military chow hall and that's saying something. Just watch the Sour Cream on the baked potato it might be a little rich after the Hospital Hi Loddy, it's good to hear from you.
