In two months, Peter Thiel, billionaire co-founder of PayPal, donated a combined $2.6 million to Endorse Liberty, a Super PAC supporting Ron Paul.

Each Republican Super PAC has its respective big-bank-account-backer, but Thiel’s contribution has people wondering why anyone would throw that much money at a candidate who hasn’t won first place yet in a single state.

Simply put, when Thiel gave $900,000 in December and $1.7 million in January, he wasn’t strictly endorsing Ron Paul — he donated in support of Paul’s libertarian ideals, Slate reported.

In an Endorse Liberty press release, Thiel explains why these principles of liberty and small-government are so important.

“Too often in this country we learn things the hard way – whether it’s putting your nest egg in overvalued stocks, borrowing more than your house is worth, or amassing a mountain of student debt to pay for a degree with no real job prospects,” he said. “With its unsustainable deficits, government spending is heading down the same path. Men and women who want freedom and growth should take action. A good place to start is voting for Ron Paul.”

Endorse Liberty is a group of entrepreneurs and inventors who call for “open, unhampered creativity,” citing innovation as an economic engine. This organization is very much in line with what Thiel preached at the Students for Liberty conference on Feb. 17, Slate reported.

While addressing the students, he also spoke about the potential of libertarians to gain support. Thiel’s investment in the pro- Paul Super PAC is essentially an investment in the overall movement.

“For the first time in perhaps 80 years, we have a chance to move the country in a more libertarian direction, with a less intrusive government, in both social and economic areas,” he said. (1 image)

If he's such a supporter of Dr. Paul and a proponent of Libertarianism then why in the hell did he stop people from using his company to support Wikileaks and Julian Assange?

Good move, Peter. We need all we can get. RP is the last hope for America. ;)

Not sure. But, it probably has something to do with not allowing attacks on others from his website.

Could you explain what you mean? Wikileaks never attacked anyone. All they did was release information to the public that the government didn't want released because they were afraid the information might hurt the two parties and the war effort. Financially supporting their efforts by sending money to them via Paypal is also not attacking anyone.

Are you maybe getting Wikileaks confused with the hacking group Anonymous?

Yes. From wiki...

After co-founding PayPal, Thiel took the company public on February 15, 2002, and sold it to eBay for $1.5bn later that year.[7]

Good point. After doing some research you are correct. He was the CEO but then sold it to ebay and only kept a 3% share.

Here is something interesting though. According to Wikipedia he is listed as a member of the Steering Committee of The Bilderberg Group.

It seems odd that a Biderberger would be a Libertarian and backer of Dr. Paul. But two million dollars is two million dollars and Dr. Paul can sure use it.

I have a gnawing feeling that something isn't on the up and up with RP. Sure, he's the only candidate who makes any sense and says good things which we like to hear.

BUT, what if his ideas of "free market economics" and "elimination of federal regulations" means swinging the door open even further for China and other overseas countries to flood our market with super cheap goods, further eroding the job market for American workers, AND eliminating safeguards against toxic wastes in our own environment?

What if he's really working for the "other side"? I'm willing to roll the dice, hope for the best and support him, but what IF he's not what he appears to be?

I know that's been argued quite a bit here, and I've no desire to see it argued again, but it's one theory I don't buy into, only because it seems to unintentionally stem from the notion that anyone who's successful standing up against tyranny has to be a 5th column.

Completely free trade is a libertarian principle, but Ron Paul is a Constitutionalist, and Constitution provides for tariffs and duties to fund the fed gov -- something I'd think Ron would be very much in favor of, since he wants to ditch the income tax.

On the environment, he has repeatedly said that the environment can and should be protected via private property rights.

Then we've lost nothing.

That can be taken to mean anyone can dump whatever they want onto their own land. The problem with that is that toxins spread to the water table and effect everyone in the vicinity or downstream.

So that sort of thing needs to be regulated, where you can't just dump anything you want into the soil or into the air in terms of airborn pollutants.

In which case it affects other's property. So that would be properly regulated by the gov. I understand that is the context RP has in mind when he says polution is handled as a private property issue.

Probably advised to do so to avoid becoming involved in the kind of treatment Bradley Manning is getting. Even if he would have been within the law, vindictive bureaucrats who don't like the info release would find something in the thousands of laws and regulations to hassle him.

Putting up tariffs against Chinese goods is just shooting yourself in the foot. Chinese then would put up tariffs of their own. No more buying Boeing's Dreamliners and other high-tech, high cost stuff. Would exclude America from the world's largest, most dynamic market. Beijing is building what they expect to be the world's busiest airport. Looking to hire American pilots'

Looks like bringing in low-cost consumer goods and selling high tech stuff is working great for Germany:

Berlin - Trade between Germany and China surged last year (2010), with the Asian economic powerhouse becoming the third-largest trading partner of Europe's biggest economy, according to data released on Tuesday.

The German statistics office said trade between the world's two biggest exporters jumped by 38.5 per cent last year (2010)to 130.2 billion euros (181.6 billion dollars).

This pushed China into third place behind Germany's key trading partners in Europe - France and the Netherlands.

German trade with France came in at 152.4 billion euros last year, while its trade with the Netherlands stood at 132 billion euros.

The data also showed that China is now Germany's biggest source of imports too. Chinese imports to Germany climbed last year by 35 per cent to 76.5 billion euros

That may have happened to someone at PayPay but it wasn't this guy. He founded the company but sold it to ebay years before that incident took place. I should have researched the guy before making the comment instead of after.
