Is marriage irrelevant? I think definitely not. This planned breakdown of society is very tragic. The first generation of this accepted trend of kids without marriage, at least (generally) had financially stable married parents to help w/ the grandkids. Poster Comment: The next generation (the kids who were born out of wedlock) now has even less familial stability, parents with divorces, exs, halves, steps, financial woes, misery. THEIR kids are much worse off than even they were. Good grief make it stop.

THe only one in my extended family that has one is my brother. She's doing fine. I'm glad he didn't marry the mother. Someone else did. But there are no hard feelings from anyone. He is still in her life.

When it comes to the article you reference, I take it with a grain of salt. I'd like to see the real stats. Not that I'm a statistician mind you, but if they are lying it's sometimes easy to tell. I have learned to take no ones word when it comes to giving stats. In my own experience, it's the blacks that have this problem. That is what I have seen with my own eyes. -------------------------------------------------------- My mother had two children out of wedlock, and I was one of them. MY stability is always being questioned, but neither me nor my children have had children born out of wedlock. Unfortunately, maintaining a close family unit takes more than one parent and I picked a mate who didn't give a crap. My bad. I am happy to report, however, that my two sons maintain a strong family unit that is proven by the successes of each of my grandchildren. My daughter, on the other hand, has been a great disappointment. SO ... generalities don't fit every situation, but I wholly agree that the breakdown of our society has been a result of the breakdown of the family unit.
I do. I have over thirty first cousins. Not one of them or any of their many children have given birth outside marriage. That is not to say that a few weddings weren't on an urgent time schedule. There are still many places where marriage is expected and the norm.

Well, let's see. How about discouraging the passing out of birth control to high school kids to start with. Teach the young girls pussy control instead of them giving themselves away to just any guy in town. Teach women that education comes first before getting hooked up with a guy (especially a guy who has no respectable job). It's not about where you came from but where you are going. If you have a structured state of mind and have a no-nonsense attitude, you will attract those similar to yourself. This also applies to relationships. The women need to focus on education and improving themselves. As for relationships, if they respect themselves, they would never get involved in a relationship where the guy is just using them for the sex. In fact, they would practice pussy control and stay focused on their career and if the man really sincerely wanted to be with this woman, he would have his shit together. Including his credit history because that is one thing that some women look at because they want to know if he is capable of paying his bills on time. Marriage is not a thing of the past and is nothing to scoff at. People still do marry and start families. It's really about how you feel about relationships. If you feel marriage is bullshit then of course, you are going to have children out of wedlock. I was born out of wedlock. In fact, my birthright was sold from me to a member of my mom's side of the family. I got screwed badly of my own bloodline and inheritance. I didn't find out the truth about this until several years ago. But, that does not mean I continue the same cycle as they did. In fact, I want to be married and refuse to be swept off my feet unless the guy has integrity and nobleness of character. Of course I like kids, but I also want them to have a future. A real future. And a real future starts with the parents who are thinking about the children's future rather than just screwing around. And btw, not all blacks fall into the category of poverty-stricken, illiterates. I have had the privilege of meeting very successful black business owners who lived in middle classed neighborhoods.
Nonsense. Those (intelligent whites) that know marriage is bullshit have even more reason to not have kids and know how to prevent it. That includes bringing our own condoms, and sometimes putting tobasco sauce in used condoms, Just To Make Sure. Women can be sneaky. The tobasco will make things unpleasant if they have any funny ideas. Blacks are a different story. They generally dont give a damn. I have had the privilege of meeting very successful black business owners who lived in middle classed neighborhoods. Wow. Really? How quaint. If you want to know how quaint, substitute "white" for "black" and see how it sounds. -------------------------------------------------------- Here in Ecuador, there's a very high rate of infidelity compared to the USA, and I never appreciated the confusion it could cause till I came here. With a high rate of children born out of wedlock, there's a real loss of family definition which impacts identity and relations with others. For example 2 people may be half brothers, each with the same mother but different father which can really screw things up, so to speak. It can be a source of division at the teen level as one can ridicule the other. Also, people can have half-siblings out there that s/he has never met. Kids have 0 or perhaps 2 fathers, one basically adopted. The confusion is pretty substantial. I can appreciate that having been in the company of it here.

I have no reason to believe that this is a new trend here. It may be what's typical for this area. There's some scientific angle that says that in warmer climates where food is plentiful year round there is less of a family unit because mothers don't really need husbands around to care for children. So the men tend to get promiscuous and the women consequently do too, and the guy who can spread himself around the most "wins" the offspring game. It more seasonal climates, women need men to be loyal and stay around to feed and cloth them to survive the winter hardships, so families are the natural survival arrangement, in stark contrast to the tropical scene, as uncared for women and children die off. So it's sort of a natural selection type thing. Or used to be in a more primitive environment.

Catholicism is by far the most popular faith around here, even more than in the states. I've never seen no many small shrines dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the USA. They are in every town, at least one, on street corners or public parks. Given that Catholicism preaches family unity, fidelity, and all that, it's kinda puzzling.
You nailed this one great! The true purpose of having children was to keep the aristocracy in place of the wealthy elite. There was no such thing as food stamps, social security, or other social benefits. Only the wealthy could afford to have children. And the purpose of having children was to keep the money in the family name through generations to follow. Marriage was a serious business and dowries had instrinsic value. An example would be the father bringing his daughter to a social function to be introduced to eligible respectable bachelors. Those bachelors had to meet the prong test by the father and mother as far as worthiness of marriage to the daughter. The idea of the daughter messing around town with men was a social disgrace as well as a disgrace to the family name. Any daughter who shamed the family name was disowned. This practice still goes on even today. In fact, I had a female roommate back in 1988 who was the same age as me. She got pregnant and when her parents found out about it, they threw her out on the streets and disowned her! Whether this pregnancy was planned or by accident (such as rape) her family would have nothing to do with it. She came from a very well-educated and affluent background and we became good friends. I felt sorry for her as she needed emotional support. I was going to night school and dating a law student and she was into computers. Very smart gal. However, our landlord at that time would not permit her to stay because, it went against his social norm system to rent out to women in distress like this. He was from the Middle East. He and I got along ok though. I was not allowed to bring men home to his place and I respected that. I was not into men anyway as I was focused on school. But my aunt was interested in him and she dated him a few times. He didn't like her because he already figured what she was up to.
