The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

With the civility we have here, I'm guessing two or three.

Depends on what you mean by "like this". My son turned me onto Reddit.com. Great site. Based on handles like this one but more anonymous, larger than FR by a long shot and you can get EVERYTHING there. There are almost 20,000 people just in the Ron Paul section, over 46,000 in the libertarian section and over 1,000,000 in the general politics section.

Other than news you have science, gaming, technology, Awww, WTF, and Bad Cop No Donut.

That said, Christine has a great site here. Great people, great information and small town atmosphere.

Yes, we're practically serving tea and crumpets compared to most sites. There are other sites where the viciousness is surpassed only by the cruelty and button-pushing that would make a hardened Apache warrior weep.

4um is unique in my experience. Every other forum I have ever posted on has been subject to flame wars, personal attacks, massive disinformation, and just general crudity.

I think it is not just the civility though that sets 4um apart. It is the people who post here - a bunch of cantankerous, obstreperous, free thinkers, who can generally remain civil even in the midst of strong disagreement. Of course there are exceptions and there have been trolls who have tried to take up residence, but they never last - they're either fried or shown the door.

4um is a self organizing system, with a few "gentle" "adjustements" by christine from time to time. :-)

Here's one I found that's impossible to get banned from, unless something is done that is clearly illegal.

Other than that, there aren't too many places that aren't run by power-tripping forum nazis. At least that I've found.

You're right of course - there are exceptions and in my defense no generalization is always 100%. However, while there are outbursts the difference between 4um and every other forum I've posted on is that it is usually civil if not agreeable.

So, now where was I?

At this point anyone you do business with on the net is going to keep a record of some kind - if only to satisfy the requirements of the Credit/Debit Card companies. I imagine that even if you used a prepaid card there would still be a shipping record if not a marketing reference for preferences.

I'm fortunate in that I live within not too inconvenient distance of one of the largest used book stores in the country - Powell's. Just pay cash, or one of their house cards if you bring books in trade, and the only record of anything is their cash register receipt for the amount of purchase and no name.

Not only that I have neighbors to annoy by playing loud raucous classical music. A little Stravinsky at high volume does the trick every time.
