KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, March 11 (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier went on a shooting rampage in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, bursting into the homes of civilians in villages near his base in the middle of the night and killing up to 16 people, an Afghan minister told Reuters.

Minister of Border and Tribal Affairs Asadullah Khalid, who is investigating the incident, said the soldier entered three homes, killing 11 people in the first one.

Other Afghan officials said at least seven people died.

The incident came just weeks after U.S. soldiers burned copies of large numbers of Korans at a NATO base, triggering widespread anti-Western protests, and plunging already strained ties between Kabul and Washington to a new low.

The soldier has been detained and an investigation is underway, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) coalition said.

Civilian casualties have been a major source of friction between President Hamid Karzai's Western-backed government and U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.

"I cannot explain the motivation behind such callous acts, but they were in no way part of authorized ISAF military activity," ISAF deputy commander Lt. Gen. Adrian Bradshaw said in a statement. (Reporting by Ahmad Nadem; Writing by Michael Georgy; Editing by Daniel Magnowski)

"I cannot explain the motivation behind such callous acts,

It begins at boot camp and increases with each deployment.

At 18 I was taken off to war, taught how to kill the enemy and we were told who the enemy was at that time.

They were called Gooks, subhuman, hatred was instilled, kill the SOB before he kills you. (Remember George Patton???)

Blaming the kids is pure unadulterated horseshit.

You can take that tack, Cyni, but that's not realistic.

No army in the field, can countenance the sort of indiscipline represented by what's alleged here.

randge...

It was quite real when I took my turn.

The majority can at least deal with it, there are a few that should never have been put in that position. Warm bodies are wanted, if the mind is not able to cope, we have such explosions.

Friend of mine, NOT A KID, did three tours in Iraq, they tried to bribe him with a promotion to do another tour. He refused and told them flat out that mentally he could no longer cope with killing.

The last I knew he was in the Pentagon, shuffling papers

Hatred is the strongest human emotion, easy to rise, difficult to control.

Been there, didnt like it.
