Dead Constitution See other Dead Constitution Articles Title: Potential employers, colleges asking for Facebook passwords Some employers and colleges are asking to have access to the Facebook pages of job applicants and student athletes, according to a report on Tuesday. MSNBC's Red Tape Chronicles blog said job applicants at the Maryland Department of Corrections have been asked to log into their accounts so that interviewers could see their wall posts, friends, photos and anything else they may have behind the social network's privacy wall. The American Civil Liberties Union complained when the department asked applicants to surrender their user name and password, so now the request is that they log in "voluntarily" during the job interview. The blog also reported that student-athletes at colleges around the country are being asked to "friend" a school official, giving them access to posts meant for friends only. Facebook spokesperson Frederic Wolens said many such school and employer policies appear to violate the site's terms. "Under our terms, only the holder of the email address and password is considered the Facebook account owner. We also prohibit anyone from soliciting the login information or accessing an account belonging to someone else," msnbc.com quoted Wolens as saying. Job seekers and college students have been warned in the past that what they post to social networks could have career repercussions in the future, but asking for passwords and asking users to log in during job interviews appears to take this threat to a new level. The San Francisco Chronicle, for example, reported on Tuesday that scholarship providers are going to Facebook and other social media sites to help vet applicants. The paper said that about 75 percent of scholarship providers surveyed by FastWeb and the National Scholarship Providers Association said they are on the lookout for for behavior that could reflect badly on the provider. The control freaks won't stop till everyone is graded as robotic sheep with themselves of course as the programmer shepards. I have a feeling Facebook or something it might evolve into will become mandatory like signing up for the draft. Here's the question: where does it end? Today your employer wants your Facebook password. Tomorrow he wants information from your ISP to know which sites you've been visiting and forces you to sign a document to allow him to obtain that information. Then the next week he finds out you've been visiting white nationalist sites and fires you. It seems harmless enough now, especially if you are self-employed or don't have a Facebook page. But it shows how increasingly there is no such thing as privacy. In ten years, your employer will require you to have neural implants attached to your brain and will be monitoring for impure thoughts. I read the one question there ""Do you have any web page accounts such as Facebook, Myspace, etc.? If so, list your username and password." You have a right to refuse to provide to any school or employer such information because it has nothing to do with your job skills or school admission. When you provide your password to link these assholes to your account you waive any such rights to sue them. When they try to compel you, under duress, to "volunteer" information (like your password) from their questions, you don't even need to respond to it. None. Unless, they have a court order subpoena, (and I would even ask them if they have one in their hands), I will not comply. Fuck 'em. If they refuse to hire because you either do not have such an account, or have one but are invoking your Fourth Amendment Rights to refuse to volunteer such information, you do have a lawsuit against that school. In fact, bring this entire matter in federal court!
